Molluscs taking over my life

can anyone help with up to date information on what works for molluscs on almost 4 year old toddler please? I’ve looked at previous threads and nobody has replied to some of my questions, some newer spots have occurred and I’ve put hydrocolloid plasters on and they’ve successfully popped and kept it contained, the original spot has also gone recently, but all the ones after remain. I’ve put tea tree oil and patches on and they aren’t budging. Summer coming up and I feel I can’t let him wear shorts and swims weekly and again can’t wear shorts. GP and nhs say they just go away on their own, but it’s been 2 years since he’s had the first one.

You may want to ask MNHQ to change the title to molluscum , I thought it was going to be about a garden plagued by slugs and snails.
Sorry no advice - your gp is right that it usually does just go away and it’s really common in primary age kids. Hope someone else has ideas.

DD had these decades ago. Horrid things. It was a waiting game and it was about two years. There weren't any "treatments" then.

For dd I think chicken pox was the catalyst that kicked them out. Within a week or two they flared and popped over the course of about 4-6 weeks - quite bloody for some.

Just put the poor wee lad in shorts and get him a sun suit thingy for the pool.

Arregaithel · 20/03/2026 09:57

Generally resolves within 6-18 months without treatment

You could consider trying Cantharone/Cantharidin @Sandip01 but it is unavailable over the counter, your GP or dermatologist could prescribe.

Thank you for the title change tip haha and the info for my son! X

Ahh he’s had chicken pox already - thank you though!

Have you tried Molludab? It worked well for us - took about three weeks to clear.

Ok I read this somewhere else too, I haven’t tried it yet. I thought to for tea tree a go, but it’s been about 6 weeks so I should probably move on to something else like molludab. Did you cover it with plasters after putting on molludab? X

My two dds had these for months and months (eldest had them much worse) and I ended up using Molludab treatment that cleared them up, I think I ordered from online pharmacy rather than getting prescription, but it worked and no ill effects. Leaving them did nothing to help!

BusterGonad · 22/03/2026 00:45

You need to pop them, without popping the body would happily live with them. When you pop them in sends the body's immune system into overdrive and it starts fighting back. I speak from experience.

KeepYaHeadUp · 22/03/2026 01:10

We used Mollenol - the roller, the dabbing stuff and the spots. It cleared it up within a few weeks after almost a year of nothing else working. No way of knowing if it was a coincidence

Sweetpea1532 · 22/03/2026 06:52

When my grandson had molluscum contagiosum, his mom was able to get a prescription for tretinoin from his GP. She applied it with a cotton bud and then put little round band-aids over them...they were completely gone in 2 weeks time. Good luck...awful disease!

This- pop a few biggies ( use tweezers to get out the core cleanly) and then whack some rubbing alcohol on it - that will get the immune system interested in the rest. Hopefully they will then all flare up and disappear.

SmallTreeDeepRoots · 22/03/2026 07:01

Take the plasters off and scratch them vigorously. It should alert the body’s immune system to deal with them.

Newyeargymwanker · 22/03/2026 07:01

Aye, pop the buggers. You need to kick the immune system into working.
also, you can’t possibly curtail your ds’s life for such a low grade common infection. you’ll give him a complex and ruin his summer. Wear shorts, go swimming, behave like it’s a common non serious childhood infection? Because it is.

Lookingfortheanswers · 22/03/2026 07:03

My now 14 year old daughter had these aged 4 and the only thing that worked, was apple cider vinegar. I used to dab it on then cover with plasters. It did sting slightly but worked well and got rid of them for good.

Lalanoodle · 22/03/2026 07:09

I tried everything before Molludab and then that completely cleared them

Plumcorkyduff · 22/03/2026 07:19

Another vote for Molludab.

Raccoonsmacaroons · 25/03/2026 23:14

Popping a few of them worked here, years ago. I think it alerted the body to the rest as has been said upthread.

Jacobolordy · 25/03/2026 23:21

Dd has this at the moment - only one but its just such a pain.

We're trying molludab now, 10 days in but still not changed. It says to stop using it when the spot goes red, but when I've done that the spots just returned to normal the next day.

When you pop it, is it just like pus from a spot? Or is there something solid you can pull out with a tweezer? Don't want to do anything that will make them spread.

OP you have my sympathy!

chobir · 26/03/2026 06:57

My dd has had these for ages, we've tried molludab to no avail. We've also tried squeezing them but that just caused pain and there's like something solid inside anyway?! Not like a normal spot.

anyway it didn't make any difference so we're just trying to ride it out now 😣

Bombayss · 19/04/2026 16:57

Have you checked out OTC iodine?
Together with tea tree is supposed to be effective.
Worth checking out.
Good luck.

ohyesido · 19/04/2026 17:19

I’m sad not to read about a plague of snails but for molluscom retinoids are the most effective treatment. Also l lysine supplements are supposed to help clear skin conditions like that and kerastosis

bongbingboo123 · 19/04/2026 17:32

my daughter had a really severe case.. doctor couldn’t care less and said to ride it out, but she was covered head to toe and some were really sore. My sons by comparison, recovered quickly
and had no problems at all…
I ended up at a Chinese herbalist who gave us a bag with about 12 ingredients in ( none of which I knew) and we had to boil a shallow bath ensuring we had covered the initial one ( the mother) that had started it all off… I remembered a very angry one on her thigh… honestly within 3 days the redness had gone and within two weeks she was back to normal… anecdotal I know, and not something you can immediately buy off the internet, but maybe worth a shot. I recommended the aame
herbalist to a friend who’s son was suffering too and his cleared up exactly the same way.
