Nappy change duration

My baby is 4 weeks old and has a nappy rash, he’s always been fussy and sometimes quite angry during nappy changes but now I am taking forever during each change because I’m paranoid about getting it all clean and dry, I think I’m taking up to 15min each time, and he becomes so irate he won’t stop crying. To make things worse, because I take so long he always ends up peeing and then I have to hassle to get him undressed and dressed again, after all the trauma of having his bum clean. How can I do a proper cleaning there without taking forever and making it the least uncomfortable for him? I’m starting to dread nappy changes and honestly feel nervous every time I know he’s about to wake up, or when I’m holding him during a feed and he poos after I have just changed him makes me honestly panic, I’m just hating every change now and it’s giving me so much stress it’s making my days (and nights) so much harder than it needs to be. Please, give me any advice on how to get it done quickly and effectively

Is he having any nappy-free time?

Nonametonight · 08/03/2025 22:26

What are you doing during the 15 minutes?

user593 · 08/03/2025 22:30

15 minutes is a long time. My son has a medical condition which meant he suffered with very bad nappy rash and I think you have to strike a balance. Wiping too much can make the rash worse. What products are you using, what technique?

Recommend cheeky wipes rather than wet wipes, so much easier to get them clean

Use cotton wool and sweet almond oil to wipe him instead of baby wipes

No wonder he is angry!! 5 minutes tops here.

does he like a bath, can you wash him when he poos instead? only the daytime ones!

Pinkelephant66 · 08/03/2025 22:43

15 mins is excessive. What exactly are you doing in that time?

If he’s sore then I wouldnt be wiping at every nappy change (I.e just wee). Let the nappy rash cream sit and do its job. Sudocreme works wonders. Don’t keep wiping it and irritating it even more.

just cotton wool and water if he’s sore, if you’d rather use wipes, then water wipes. Nothing perfumed.

before you take the nappy off, slide your fresh nappy underneath , so you can take off the wet / dirty nappy then if he wees, you can quickly cover him with the fresh nappy. This will contain the wee and stop it going everywhere so you don’t have to change his clothes!

good luck

Yes, started yesterday, just once a day though

He’s not a fan of baths either, I am bathing him every day now to keep his bum clean, but if I did it every nappy change he’d be quite upset as well. I do use cotton wool and warm water to clean him, let some of the water drip to rinse his bum off and then par dry with a muslin

He’s quite a pooper so his nappy is dirty every change (he’ll sleep sometimes for up to four hours but most often he has his nappy changed at least every 2-3, or as soon as he soils them when he’s awake or contact napping). I will try and keep the cleaning more focused on the buttock area though as I’ve been cleaning the whole nappy area every time, even if his last change was less than an hour earlier

I’m using cotton wool and warm water, then patting it dry with a muslin cloth, using Bepanthen now, tried sudocrem for a couple of days but didn’t help. I was using the Weleda one before but stopped since I noticed the rash
