Dirty and wet nappies

My newborn is 4 days old. First few days we were getting regular dirty and wet nappies. This now seems to have stopped. One wee last night and one poo today (small). He seems fine and we heart lots of farting. He’s eating has increased. Sleeping well. Should I be concerned?

That sounds a bit unusual. Since he is still new, can you call the post natal ward and have a word with the midwife there

nocoolnamesleft · 21/09/2024 15:44

Not too worried about the pooing, but that does not sound right about the weeing. At that age should still be under the midwives so could call them for advice?

SpecduckularlyQuackers · 21/09/2024 15:49

Agree - I'd definitely want to talk to someone about the lack of wet nappies in case he's getting dehydrated. Please call the midwives to check with them.

At that age you’re looking for at least two poos a day and as many wet nappies as how many days old they are (up to about 6/7 days).
Are poos going green/yellow?

this is a good guide

Poos I’m not too concerned about as a PP said. It’s normal for babies not to poo everyday especially if they are breast fed but the urine out pit is the main concern

Notdeckingthehalls · 21/09/2024 16:13

Yes, you need to ring the maternity ward. Not weeing all day will mean they will
need to be admitted.

kenidorm · 21/09/2024 16:19

If he actually has not done a wee since last night, you need to go to the hospital- don't waste any time phoning. Take him in ASAP.

mynameiscalypso · 21/09/2024 16:22

I'd be going in asap if he hasn't had a wee all day today.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 21/09/2024 16:24

You need to take him in. Can you see the fontanelle?

Tdcp · 21/09/2024 16:28

Another one for being concerned about wees, he should be making lots of wet nappies. Poos aren't so concerning as babies can go days without poos especially if breastfed.

I agree. They should ring when they’re on the way.

I’m hoping OP is at hospital now or is on her way.

The reason I was thinking midwives was most places they can call paeds directly, which would often bypass the worry of a neonate in a crowded A&E.

Nats1988 · 21/09/2024 18:39

Thank you everyone. Have spoken to my midwife and been given some advice. Appreciate everyone’s comments.

Just to say it’s not normal for most bf babies to not go for days without pooing. They should be pooing every day until around 6 weeks old. In the early days it can indicate an issue.

Came to say the same as this. The NHS website has also been updated to say that before 6 weeks they should be pooing every day. In our case, when poos dropped off, it was a sign of poor milk transfer (later we found out due to a very severe tongue tie). It's only after 6 weeks that BF babies can slow down the pooing.

My newborn is 7do today, ALL of yesterday and all throughout the night every single one of his nappies leaked wee. These are the same nappies we’ve been using since birth, we’ve not had this problem the other days. Any tips? It’s driving my husband and myself up the wall, nappies shouldn’t be complicated 🤣

Sdiskin01 · 17/07/2025 21:28

My newborn is 4 days old and is formula fed and has only had 1 Pooh in the past 35 hours but previously was filling nappies, is this normal?

It can be very normal yes. Are they having plenty of wet nappies?

The NHS website says for formula fed babies under 8weeks old, if they haven't done a poo for 2 or 3 days, you should talk to your midwife, GP or HV. Are you due to have your 5 day check tomorrow? If no poo overnight, I'd mention it to the midwife (especially as the weekend is coming up) and follow her advice. Congrats on your baby!
