Vitamin D tablets

So I gave birth in a foreign country and the standard practice here is vitamin d tablets after two weeks of age. The doctor said to crush it and mix it with a couple drops of water, I’ve been doing it but im
concerned about flooded kidneys and lots of people say not to give babies water, I know I’m over thinking it and my baby is three weeks old today but id like to know that the half teaspoon of water mixed with the crushed tablet is not going to cause my baby any issues. It’s the middle of the night so can’t ask my midwife for reassurance and need the sleep. She spits half of it out too anyway.

I'm not sure this is the best topic/board to have posted in - I think you really need a health one or parenting.

Honestly though, I don't think you should be taking advice from anyone on the internet about giving your 2 week old baby crushed up medication in water. It does NOT sound safe to me - if a baby needs this, a proper prescription suitable for a baby should be issued. It's also not standard practice in all countries, so I would be questioning why it is where you are.

Have you also checked that your doctor didn't mean that YOU should be taking vitamin D, 2 weeks after giving birth? It doesn't make much more sense than giving it to a baby, but very slightly more!

Congratulations on your new baby though, and I hope you can get the professional advice you need. It doesn't sound like your baby needs it urgently right now (or they would be in hospital, or it would have been prescribed) so this can almost definitely wait until the morning.

How are you both now?

I forgot about this! Called my midwife the next day and Just 2am new mum crazy. She was meant to have the tablets and I was doing it correctly but it turned out that she can’t take vitamin D supplements at all as they react with her stomach. I also got diagnosed with anxiety. Shocker hahaha

Sorry I never responded, all babies in this country are prescribed vitamin d if they’re breast fed and I was doing it right it was just post partum anxiety and the fact my personal baby has a mild stomach reaction to vitamin d generally. I did call the midwife the following day and the doctor but was just freaking out at 2am for no reason which gratefully doesn’t happen anymore lol

for any other mums freaking out and reading this in the future they also can prescribe drops or a spray which is way easier to give a newborn.

Glad all is ok now - I hope things are going well with your baby x

I'm glad you're ok now too and I can't believe they didn't prescribe the drops or spray at first.
