My 5 week old has just been prescribed CMPA milk, he is so unsettled most the day just wondering if he does have CMPA when do the symptoms start to settle when using the new milk as it is so hard as there is nothing we can do to console him.

Which milk is he on @Shalorna and is he drinking it?

I've got CMPA and I think it was a couple of days after cutting out dairy completely that I started to feel a bit better.

Shalorna · 20/10/2023 09:23

Hi he’s on the nutrimigen the first few days were really hard but yesterday he seemed a lot better and had his first green stool so hoping the old milk is now getting flushed out of him

Like I said, I felt so much better after a couple of days but it took me a good two weeks to feel like I was completely free of the dairy and was healing Flowers

Nutramigen isn't dairy free, instead the dairy protein is more broken down which they say is easier to digest. My son was still in bits on it and had to go on to an amino acid based formula called neocate. Within a few days he was like a new baby.

Shalorna · 20/10/2023 19:36

How long did you try your baby on the nutrimigen milk for till you changed to neocate?

My daughter did fine with nutramigen, my son needed neocate.

I can't remember exactly how long it took things to settle down but hopefully someone will have better advice.

Good luck, mine were really unhappy babies till we got to the bottom of their allergies and then they were (and remain) delightful.

lbf123 · 03/01/2024 11:20

@Shalorna how did you get on with this? And what symptoms made you suspect CMPA?

I think my 3mo may have a CMPA and about to speak to GP about trying a prescribed formula, interested to know how your journey has been so far?

Mummybuttons23 · 23/02/2024 03:21

I have a 3mo who has been diagnosed with CMPA after a really long and strenuous battle from 11 days old she was on aptamil then sma then nurtimagen but then got put on alfamino formula after diagnosed and hasn't improved I'm wondering if she may need to be put on another type?
My baby girl has curdled green bowel movements and really bad eczema all over her body and stresses really bad with rubbing the face rubbing the feet and head (all are red raw and weepy from aggravation of rubbing) has anyone else had a very unsettled poorly baby with alfamino formula after being diagnosed with CMPA? I have googled and been to the emergency room and GPs more times than being at home with her.. any advice or just someone to talk to would be greatly appreciated (3+ month battle so far)

@Mummybuttons23 my thoughts are with you because we've had a similar battle. Maybe not as much with the eczema (she had eczema when she was on 'normal formula' but it cleared up when put on Aptamil Pepti 1. But that's the only symptom that has improved with the Pepti 1. Apart from that she is constantly in pain, refuses feeds, struggles to nap, arches her back, is sick, has terrible reflux, has runny stools, sounds chesty after drinking milk, is very unsettled, wants to be constantly bounced, has terrible (smelly) wind etc. she spends the majority of the day crying. Tried Infacol, Gripe Water, Gaviscon. Currently she's been prescribed Omeperazole to take alongside the Pepti 1 but after a day of difference she went back to experiencing the same symptoms. Went back to the GP two days ago, he doubled the dosage, again, saw a difference for one day and now she's back to square one again with the same symptoms.

I wondered the same thing as you as she's been on Pepti 1 for a while now and she's still so unsettled and the GP said that he thinks Omeperazole can help fix her issues. He agreed that if nothing changes then in 2-3 weeks we'll change her formula to an Amino Acid Formula (I think that's what it's called?!)

In your case I think you should be given AAF because he said the reason he's reluctant to prescribe it straight away is because in his experience children that require AAF formula have terrible skin rashes and eczema. My DD doesn't have this anymore so he said he thinks that Omeperazole alongside the Pepti 1 should help. I'm not too sure about this because after a day we're back at square one, but considering your child has skin related symptoms I believe you qualify for the AAF. Have a look at your local CMPA prescribing guidelines and use these to fight your case. Usually they will suggest the routes that should be taken before it's prescribed and you can show that you've taken the other route. Also, keep a symptom diary daily, this helps argue your case in regards to frequency of symptoms etc.

My daughter got prescribed nutramigen they say to keep them on it 4 weeks as then the old milk will be out of their system and the new milk will be in full effect, however my little girl screamed non stop for 48 hours on it and it was like a full in pain scream so I stopped it and went back to gp, she's now on sma alfamino which has been much better from the moment she had it, she does still show signs of an allergy so waiting on seeing a consultant but she's no where near as bad as she was on nutramigen or normal formula

Mummybuttons23 · 12/07/2024 13:10

@user666555 I have gone and bought Neocate formula and had tried her on that and straight away she wasn't sick wriggley or anything had informed her doc at the hospital then had a follow up and her skin was a lot clearer but not quite completely gone do he prescribed stronger steroid cream then we were in the clear for about a month started the weaning process and unfortunately I gave her Almond milk (soy based even though said it was suitable for milk and soy allergy)as didn't contain any but was not listed on ingredients and has been slowly getting over her allergic reaction with that but the doctors have now put her on neocate prescription but still fighting me on her skin care (creams and antihistamines) just seems like we win one battle and then have to carry on the fight for another battle about the same problem but for different things (will it ever get better and easier) I hope everything is okay with your little one have they not tried a skin test or anything to see if it is still the milk? as my baby girl ended up being allergic to soy (which is in alfamino formula) lecithin is the scientific name but still causes the same reaction even if made from a different plant (sunflower, soy bean etc) my heart is with you all

Mummybuttons23 · 12/07/2024 13:15

And be careful a lot of the doctors will prescribe antiflux meds and antihistamines to help with the reaction instead of actually investigating the cause, I'd suggest if still no better see about trying a different formula without soy base or try neocate (may not be soy allergy but it is very a allergenic formula so may be something else causing it in the formula? )
