20 week old baby girl weighs 20lb

Hi there I am looking for some advice as I feel like the worst mum in the world. I took my 20 week old daughter to get weighed and she weighs 20lb already. She does have chunky legs but doesn’t look overly chubby and is still in 3-6month clothes. They didn’t measure her length. She is so so happy and reaching all milestones.
she was 7lb 8 when born so her weight has gone up much quicker than it should have.
The HV said I need to take her back in another month to check her weight again and then they will decide how to proceed. I just feel absolutely devastated that I might have overfed her and it’s keeping me awake at night that it’s going to cause her issues.
she currently has 6, 6oz bottles in 24 hours (usually she leaves a little bit so is probably having 5.5oz). She eats every 3 hours and always has. She sleeps great on a night
I’m just so upset and can’t stop thinking about it.
any advice welcome! Thanks so much

I can’t remember exactly what my baby was doing that age in terms of feeds, I think she had 4 7oz bottles a day and we’d started to introduce solids. I’ve no idea what she weighed then so I can’t compare. I think I would probably urge you to just give yourself a break over it more than anything. If she has had a bit too much, you can deal with it. It’s also not long before she’ll start moving around and that’ll use up sooooooo much energy.

The fact you’re posting shows you care so just accept you’re doing fine and you’ll address issues as and when they come up. You are not a terrible parent!

My baby girl was 9lb 10oz when she was born. By 16 weeks she was 16.6lb I feed her on demand but she is EBF. Your daughter sounds like a fed, happy baby. Don't beat yourself up. There are enough things for you to worry about on a daily basis, and that shouldn't be one of them. Hugs x

Honestly that’s the HV going to do, put her on a diet?
It won’t be long till she’s moving about and burning off the energy.
I really wouldn’t worry about it, so long as she is happy and healthy that’s all that really matters.

My ds1 was a proper chunky baby, he was 9lb5oz and piled on the weight, he was 9lb 10oz at 5 days old and he was EBF.
He’s now a strapping 14 yo and very tall and skinny, not an ounce of fat on him.

I can’t remember how much my friends dd weighed but I remember I physically couldn’t pick her up, she was huge a massive chunk, also had 6 teeth by 3 month old. My dd is same age and was so tiny which is probably why the difference was so noticeable. Now they are 10yo and you could not tell the difference between them, friends dd looks like any other 10yo.

I have another friend whose DS was the same, at 3 months old he weighed more than his 4yo sister. M friends DH picked my DD up when she was 6yo and almost flung her in the air he wasn’t expecting her to be so light after picking his son up. Again now his son is 8yo he looks just like every other boy in his class.

Dont worry about anything, every baby is different. As long as you feel baby is healthy and happy just keep doing what your doing.

My son was honestly the chubbiest baby , looking back at photos he was like an overstuffed sofa. You could barely see his eyes. I was told he was off the scale by the hv. By age 8 he was skin and bone and continues to have zero excess fat , he is now 17. Dont worry. Just offer good nutritious food and relax

DS was 7.12 at birth and 19lbs at 4 months, if I am honest he carried a little bit of weight throughout his childhood but always within the healthy range. He is nearly 19 now and a healthy weight.

I’ve just looked at DS red book. He was 7lb 6oz at birth and hit 20lb at 22 weeks. He’s now a tall, solid 6 year old with not an oz of fat on him! Your DD sounds like she’s thriving 😊

It sounds like a huge amount of milk. Is that what HV recommended? It's that formula or normal milk? Is she not eating much? There is a 24 month old where I work who is so heavy he weighs nearly as much as my 14yo son (who is on the skinny side .. But still!). My colleague didn't believe me until she had to pick him up and said he's the heaviest child she's ever lifted (she's been working in childcare for 20+ years). Don't worry too much but do take the advice they offer. If you are doing it all and she is still heavy then that's how she is. If she's eating large portions/ unhealthy foods and drinking too much milk, then your answer is there.

Hi op she should have moved on to feeding every 4 hours now at least I would try and stretch her feeding times. Every 3 hours is more for a newborn.

I'm pretty certain you cannot over feed a baby, especially if you're feeding on demand. Baby will only take what he/she needs and then bring up/refuse the rest. Is she following her centile line correctly or has she jumped up several centiles since birth?

Just to add, my 6 week old is weighing 11lb 7oz 😅 girl loves her milk and is almost sleeping though the night already. 2nd child was pretty much the same. Whereas my first born could literally survive off fresh air 🤦‍♀️ all babies are different, some are just born with bigger/smaller appetites x

yup, that baby needs to get on to slimming world ASAP…

there’s nothing wrong, feed on demand, weights will go up and down in babies.

Honestly that’s the HV going to do, put her on a diet?

^This

Weight centiles are pretty meaningless without measuring the height centile as well.

Are either of you tall? Did the HV measure her height? Was she long when she was born?

Stop worrying. My DS1 was a hungry baby and really chubby. I distinctly remember weighing him at 20 weeks...and he was 20 pounds.
He soon slimmed down when crawling and walking.
He is now a slim, fit 26 year old and gorgeous!

I agree with this. My daughter is on the 75th centile for her weight BUT is on the 91st (I think) for her height. I'm 5'9 and her dad is 6'2 so she's actually perfect for her height 😊

I don’t know, it does seem pretty heavy for 3 months.
Ds was nearly 9lb born, but didn’t weigh 20lb until 12 months..

I've seen a parent over feed a baby (more like a one year old). She was stuffing mashed potato into it and the baby had quite a lot and when it started trying to avoid the spoon she kept on going and stuffing it in. The baby was enormous.
You're not that.
If you're letting her stop feeding when she's had enough and the formula you are giving is not a deliberately high energy variety (hungry baby formula) then you're doing nothing wrong.
Some babies are chubby.
They also go sideways before they go up.
Every time I've looked at my babies and thought 'crikey that's a lot of chins' A month later they've been an inch taller and svelte again. 😉

I dont really think it is a case of you doing anything wrong

It is more a case of the 1/1000 chance that there is a mild medical problem, that is easily dealt with if caught early, and so all babies putting on this much weight are double checked, to be sure

I mean it is pretty heavy. I don’t think she’s having a lot of milk though, unless she’s weaning onto solids and having a fair bit. I should imagine she’s more insinuating they will refer her to paeds for investigation in case there is anything wrong, not that you are doing anything wrong yourself.

For perspective my girl is around 24lbs, 75th centile but 14 months. She doesn’t look chunky at all even though they would class her as above average.

Mine was 20 lbs a few weeks earlier than yours. They accepted it due to his being breastfed. He levelled out once he got mobile and was a perfectly normal older baby, toddler and child in weight.

I can't remember how much my son weighed at that age but he was a chunk. He was bang on 50th percentile when he was born at 7lbs 6 by 6 months he was just over the 91st percentile. He was ebf so I didn't really know how much he was getting but just fed him when he wanted. He lost some of his chunk once he started moving around more but stayed fairly chunky until he was 3. He's now a bean pole. I don't think it's something to worry about at this age.

maybe you could stretch to 4 hours between feeds, so you give one less bottle a day.

Maybe introduce a vegtable puree at one feed- perhaps mid day instead of a bottle - she's not far off reccomended age

She'll even out before long
