Hi all I’m new to mums net, I thought I’d join and get stuck right in socialising with all the moms.

I just wanted to ask
Does anyone here buy handmade clothing? If you do
What would the price you’d pay for a legging and headband set?

Bearing in mind your paying for the materials such as fabric, elastic, thread, electric and the time of the person who’s making it.

I’m only pointing this out as

I personally make handmade clothing for children and I get told I’m overpriced by family but there expecting me to have similar prices to Asda and next..

Now I don’t get my fabric cheap I pay roughly Ā£8-12 per half meter do I don’t know how I’m even meant to sell anything for anything less than Ā£15, but if I get it cheaper my prices are obviously less..

How do I keep my costs down and make them affordable for all my customers??

I cut ,sew, elasticate, overlock and iron them before packing them in my branded packaging which also costs me as I believe everyone should get a pretty package as life is all about snapping and taking pictures before trying or even eating nowadays.

I would really like to know everyone’s opinion?

My clothing is popular on instagram considering I’ve only opened April this year and following is currently 6000, I would like it to grow Much further I would just like to know how I could possibly make my items more affordable?

Um if you're into Insta you're going to go down like a lead balloon on here. Especially if you're putting headbands on babies. Try Netmums.

I'm a dressmaker and my way of thinking is if after you've taken cost of materials and time into consideration, if someone still thinks it's too expensive then it's not for them. If they don't appreciate the handmade aspect (this includes using quality materials, unusual designs etc) than they should stick to Asda and next and they aren't meant to be a customer of yours anyway. They are not your target audience.
I also think that if family and friends want to support you in your business they wouldn't ask for a discount.
I think you should continue growing your customer base and then look into buying fabric in bulk to cut costs. Look for local suppliers and also search for oddies textiles, they do bulk orders online.

What do you mean by that??? Try netmums?

I don’t think personally there is anything wrong with putting headbands in children or even babies if you are closely monitoring them at all times, I mean I did put them on my daughter and she seemed fine, but obviously it was taken off when she was asleep, headbands are a fashion statement, it’s either that or a clip and children do look pretty in them. I personally like them and I’m sure majority of others do too and a lot of people just put them on their children just to take photos really, p.s with every accessory I sell I have warning labels on how they can be dangerous on a child if their not observed (babies mainly)

Hello everyone, my first day on here, have heard good things about this web site, nice to be on here at last, have kept meaning to join, look forward to reading all you have to share. Thanks x

You would have to increase your customer levels to the point where it's worth buying in bulk I agree, sometimes suppliers sell jerseys/ribs in bolts so around 10m so it's not a huge huge amount. Sometimes I find that if you find fabric you like online and look in local fabric shops and markets it's usually half the price too.

Hi fellow mums! I'm Susan and new to mumsnet. I love Gregorian chants. Whenever I'm stressed parenting I just put my 3 hour playlist while eating my vegan gluten-free oat bars and everything is good again. I recommend you all try it out!
