Silent reflux in preemie ? HELP!

17 replies

Belmanlady · 22/09/2018 09:19

Hi everyone. I have read so much regarding reflux on babies but a little confused.
LO is 10 weeks (4 weeks corrected) and in the past week has been extremely fussy after feeds, not sleeping well, very noisy, sneezing, choking and has gone from taking 5ozs to 3-4oz if we are lucky.
I are inclined to think he is suffering with silent reflux as on my spits up a few feeds a day.
Partner thinks I am being an over cautious first time mum but nights are getting extremely hard as he is not settling so now I'm suffering.
Any advice welcome please Smile

Op our son was also six weeks early. He had silent reflux, CMPA, and a soya allergy. Very very common in premies. Your GP can prescribe dairy free formula (you need neocate not nitramigen). Good luck! Xxx

@Grumpasaurus
Did your Go pescribe anything for the reflux such as gaviscon? My LO one only fills his nappy once every 3-4 days so worried if they do prescribe gaviscon it will make him constipated?
I feel helpless and completely exhausted as he doesn't sleep anywhere for more than an hour and half and has to be on me or my partner xxx

My daughter had a very bad case of silent reflux, we were initially prescribed gaviscon but it messed her stomach up for poos

After much badgering of the hospital, she was given domperidone and ranitidine by syringe
Also given a different milk for her called nutrimigen

She slept on an incline, inside of a little nest to keep her up, but placed on her front
Back laying caused the burning to be even more intense causing further issues

Grumpasaurus · 23/09/2018 11:03

We had to push and push.

Gaviscon made everything worse- avoid!

We were eventually prescribed Nutramigen, which didn't work as there is still Cow's milk in it, and then neocate, which changed our lives.

Then later, we were prescribed omeprazole. Go to your GP and insist on trying the milk first, neocate, then see where you get to.

Good luck. It's awful.

@Grumpasaurus
How long did it take for you to notice a difference with neocate? my best friend has a baby who has CMPA and another friend is a paediatric dietician, has suggested to borrow some neocate off best friend to try as Drs will try everything before this and I'm convinced this is the issue
We've had gaviscon for 6 days, worked initially and now He is struggling with his poos and still unsettled and uncomfy
Thanks xxx

It was pretty quick. Within a day or two.

I don't have anymore of the baby neocate or I would send you some, but definitely get some if you can as then you can see. Doctors don't like prescribing it because it's expensive! And they don't listen.

Grumpasaurus · 29/09/2018 21:37

Ps we had the same experience with gaviscon and then with ranitidine.

spinabifidamom · 29/09/2018 21:55

My son and daughter were born a month earlier. They stayed at the hospital for several days. Definitely ask about baby neocate it helped my baby girl. See what the GP says. Does the hospital have a lactation consultant or not? I had one they were incredibly helpful.
Insist on trying the milk first though. If that doesn’t work then consider neocate. You might have to essentially harass the nurses for a while. Best of luck as it’s awful.
Make sure that you are satisfied. Doctors hate recommending the stuff for financial reasons but if you keep asking them they might. It makes me feel so frustrated though because it makes no financial difference in the grand scheme of things.

butlerswharf · 29/09/2018 21:57

Take little one to the GP.

They'll prescribe Gaviscon first (which probably won't work)

Then Ranitidine, which is great stuff.

Just an update and to vent really - been back to the Dr today as a week of gaviscon just made it difficult for LO to poo and he is still not a happy baby.
Dr has said he isn't convinced it's reflux and has prescribed nutimigen as thinks due to him being premature his digestive system isn't up mature enough to digeste the enzymes in normal formula - he examined LO's tummy and when he pressed on it on quite hard we had lots bottom burps.
I'm still not 100% convinced as he sounds wheezy when he sleeps, cries through feeding and wakes 45 kind after feed sometimes gagging and choking. We have to try this for 2 weeks - I'm praying it works as i am running on 3 hours broken sleep a night and it's taking it's toll 😔 x

@butlerswharf
I thought the Dr today would have given us ranitidine but he doesn't think it's reflux so changed his milk to nutrimigen.
It's like a mine field but just hope something works and fast as this is awful for LO and exhausting for me x

@spinabifidamom
Thanks for your post. LO is ff.
Dr is not convinced it's reflux and thinks as he was premature his digestive system is struggling with digesting the milk and has prescribed nutrimigen.
Just hoping this works as both myself and DS are exhausted x

Oh god, I hear you and I feel you. We jumped through all the same hoops. Nutramigen made a small difference but the real help didn't come until neocate.

Can you borrow some from your friend or even buy some online? If I had any left for younger babies I would send it to you.

Belmanlady · 07/10/2018 12:31

@Grumpasaurus @butlerswharf
We've had the week from hell.
After gp prescribed nutramigen LO wouldn't take more than 2ozs and was very unhappy, he became really sleepy and just not himself. I called 111 and they advised to take him to a&e. After a 7 hour stay in the hospital he got diagnosed by the paed consultant with... yes you guessed.. silent reflux!! They advised to go back onto aptamil and prescribed ranitidine and carobel.
He seems to be settling a little better so hoping this time we have something right!
I think I'm hoping for a miracle cure and for LO to sleep got 5 hours at least on a night but with him being 6 weeks early I don't think this will happen for some time yet.
He is now 12 weeks actual and praying it gets easier from here on in xxx

Oh poor you and poor guy!

How are you getting on now?

DS is two and he still doesn't sleep through. Apparently very common in premies...

But he sleeps from 7:30 to 1200, then is only usually up once again between 12:00 and 8am... so okay...

Belmanlady · 11/10/2018 09:11

@Grumpasaurus
Well LO is much more settled after feeds now and we can put him down immediately after (although he prefers to be cuddled) 😜 seems to be struggling with wind at the minute but I'm sure he will grow out of that soon 🤞🏻

I will be happy once a routine is established as we are still going with the flow, sometimes he feeds every 3 hours sometimes 4, sometimes 3oz sometimes 4.5oz - I'm sure it will settle down as the weeks pass.

As with your LO I would be happy with one wake up call in a 12 hour period but currently we are having 3-4. Again he is only 6 weeks actual so I will just have to be patient and meanwhile enjoy all the cuddles xx
