Relocating to Nottingham

Hi everyone, DH and I are looking at relocating to Nottingham early next year and would love to get some feedback as to some family friendly and safe neighborhoods that we can look at settling in. We have an eight year old daughter and would welcome recommendations as well as to great schools. Nervous but excited, we've spent time in Mapperley area and quite like how everything is within easy reach. Any advice anyone? Thanks in advance! Warm Regards from the Caribbean.

Wow, it’s going to be a bit bloody cooler than the Carribean! Have a look at West Bridgeford. I know it’s really difficult to get your DC into schools there though, but you might get lucky Smile

Have you tried posting in MN Local as well?

MrsMozart · 21/08/2018 19:39

Depends on your budget and interests.

Excellent location for motorway access.

Easy to get to the Peak District.

Good town centre with variety of shops.

Lots of parks.

Good transport (recent tram system).

RelocatingMama · 22/08/2018 14:33

LOL it is certainly a lot cooler than the Caribbean! We just spent a month in England and I was amazed at the change in temperatures during our time there. That being said, we have quite fallen in love with your beautiful country. My DH is British but born in the Caribbean and lived there his entire life. JiltedJohnsJulie, thank you for your recommendation. I have heard of West Bridgford and will look into it for sure. Thank you both 😊

Yes, the weather changes a lot and we had roughly an 8 month winter last year. Are you sure you’re up for this OP? Smile

RelocatingMama · 22/08/2018 21:42

Never truly sure but I am sure that I need to give it a try and have no regrets 😊. I’ve experienced quite a bit of your winters and falls, as we normally vacation there around those times - I don’t mind the cold. It certainly will be an adventure 😏

It certainly will be an adventure 😏 it definitely will be Smile

There is an established Caribbean population in Hyson Green. We go there every month to do a food shop.

WestBridgford is the best place to live but it's also the most expensive.

RelocatingMama · 23/08/2018 01:08

I've had a look at some of the rentals in West Bridgford area and they do seem a bit on the pricey side. I was hoping to locate somewhere close to The Good Shepherd School. I've been in to see their school and its quite lovely. Any opinions on Woodthorpe or Mapperley?

I will also look at Hyson Green Savoy, thanks for the heads up.

Woodthorpe and mapperley are both nice areas and basically next door to each other. Also a stones throw away are st Ann's and thorneywood which personally I'd avoid (on the edge some may try and tell you a property in these areas is mapperley ) Carlton and Arnold are ok in most parts and again close to woodthorpe and mapperley. Lovely shops and cafes in that area and only 15 min into the city centre. Do you know what area you'll be working? Traffic can be a nightmare, so if you needed to be on the other side of the city then consider wollaton, beeston and bramcote.

bluemoonchances · 23/08/2018 01:50

Personally I'd avoid Hyson green, it has a rough reputation, close by though is sherwood which is nice, similar shops/cafe vibe to mapperley.

Badbilly · 23/08/2018 02:28

Woodthorpe and Mapperley are good, but I would avoid Hyson Green, as although it has improved immensely over the last 20 years, it is still quite run down.

Arnold and Carlton are mostly fine, depends on your budget and expectations.

West Bridgford is very good, but very expensive, as is Wollaton, Bramcote, Ruddington and parts of Beeston-but the later has a huge student population and areas within Beeston vary quite considerably.

Thank you so much everyone. I actually did a drive through St. Anns and visited a school in the area as well and was not impressed at all. I have a friend who lived in Woodthorpe for many years and highly recommends the area, and another that currently lives in Mapperley. I've stayed in the area this Summer and found it quite convenient, both in terms of shopping, cafes etc. and its proximity to City Centre. I drove through an area called Lambley several times and liked the feel of it, seemed rather quiet for the most part, though, that's just me doing a drive by and not having anything else to go on. The most important factor honestly right now for me is the best school for our DD. She's in a private Catholic School now and I would love to continue along that line, but I'm open to other options as well. I understand that the UK operates on the OFSTED ratings for their state schools and where you live factors into the whole zoning process. A lot of things to think about but will persevere and definitely am most thankful for all your suggestions.

Lambly is a lovely village.

bluemoonchances · 24/08/2018 19:39

Schools are measured by ofstead but don't go on this alone, there are many schools with excellent ofstead in areas I wouldn't want to live!

Have a look at this link , use it alongside ofstead. www.goodschoolsguide.co.uk

In terms of areas to live, have a look at Nottinghamshire police website to see crime figures in areas.

RelocatingMama · 24/08/2018 20:23

Thanks Bluemoonchances :) Going to go pull it up now!

Mapperley/Woodthorpe/Woodborough/Lambley are all lovely. You should check out Sherwood. It has a really lovely "arty" feel to it. Lots of really lovely independent businesses and a yearly arts week that the whole town gets involved in.

Shitterbox · 24/08/2018 20:34

Beeston, Wollaton and West Brigford are lovely and quite proximate to the city centre Smile

Saidthesharktotheflyingfish · 24/08/2018 20:38

Really don't move to Hyson Green or St Ann's. Lambley, Burton Joyce, East Bridgford all nice. As is West Bridgford, which has loads going on. Maybe check out crime rates for each area, as some parts are very high crime.

SmegHeadz · 24/08/2018 20:43

The Becket School is the Catholic secondary in West Bridgford if you want to check it out. State not private.

RelocatingMama · 24/08/2018 20:53

Wow, thanks everyone, you all are being so helpful. Truly appreciate it :) Smeg - DD is only 8 - so looking at primary schools. Heaven help me, I can't even think of her being a teenager yet! LOL I'll get more grey hair hehehe

OP posts:
bluemoonchances · 24/08/2018 21:09

The Becket school has a very good reputation.

Don't know much about Nottingham (apart from the arena) but word of warning about schools - they are full mostly so when arriving mid year you will have to take what's available or home school until a place comes up at a school you can settle on, a bit stressful we found! We moved a similar distance to you and it was a bit of a shock but has worked out well in our new city (I hadn't even visited until the day we moved into the house we had only seen online!)
