Toddler night time sleep advice

Hi all I have a 22 month old son who has never been the best sleeper but not the worst either. We have had ups and downs like im sure most people have with sleep but it had settled and he was going to sleep at night nicely and sleeping through. Then obvuoulsy he got some teeth that disrupted that and it was up and down for a while.

Recently he has been really fighting going to bed at night. He goes down for his nap no problem at all, off to sleep straight away. But at night he will scream. We have tried various things: doing bath coming back downstairs as it seemed to make him more awake, later bed time, leave him to cry a bit each time (not keen on this as he gets so hysterical he can vomit!)

We recently went on holiday and he went to sleep perfectly each night! I couldn't figure that out as i thought being somewhere new would be worse! As soon as we got back home usual protest resumed.

So I was wondering if this is a phase we just need to ride out or if there is something else we can try?

Thank you

Was he more physically active on holiday?

Yes we were out a lot more and by the sea (he always sleeps better with sea air!) But he is quite an active child anyway at home. We go out a lot so he can run around or he is in the garden a lot.

Does he need to nap for long? I would maybe cut the nap down or drop it, so that he goes down to sleep more readily at night.

I shortened his nap and he did fall asleep straight away at bedtime hurrah! But then I got another issue I have experienced before too...he woke up every hour/hour and a half! So then I wondered if overtired?
Its a tricky one!
