Has anyone heard of Motherwell/Cleland in North Lanarkshire? I posted in local, but the forum seems to be inactive. Anywho, if you've heard of it, would you say it's safe and a good place to raise kids?

I mean this kindly : it still feels like you are leaping at cheap(er) houses and sticking pins in maps.

You need to google for info, read inspection reports for schools, visit and stay in areas and so on.

Or,as someone suggested, rent for a while to see how an area suits you!

Quite a few people have suggested good places to you . Airdrie wasn't on anyone's list...

OP this village is 5 mins away from where I stay now it's well under your budget and has your full 5 beds. It's called netherburn. It really is a tiny village. The main part has 5 streets. This is a new development that's nearly finished. The village itself only has one shop but 10 mins drive or the bus is regular the 255 runs every half hour right down to the main street in larkhall and you have shops. There is a small school which is a good school. The kids tend to get more attention due to the fact there isn't many of them. High school wise 2 busses run. One to larkhall academy(AVOID) and also lesmahagow high which is a better school.

Thanks for the links.

Piggy unfortunately we can't rent because we're porting our mortgage. We're going back up though so we'll try to get another feel for the areas.

Loonyluna16 mining communities were destroyed by Thatcher. In places where all the men worked in the mines the employment was taken away and there was often nothing to replace it with. Some ex-mining towns haven't ever really recovered, and are grim places to be.

Thinking of one I won't name - my exes family's hometown (N England). An ex mining community in beautiful countryside. But that also means isolated. I've never been to such a depressing place. Still, massive unemployment there and an underlying feeling of lack of hope or a stake in society. It was being there that made me realise just how utterly devastating what Thatcher did was, that the effects last generations. It really opened my eyes.

Hi everyone sorry to jump in but you all seem to know a fair bit about Glasgow areas! I’m looking to move to Glasgow as I currently live in Dunoon and there is nothing for me and the kids here (great place to retire) I’ve been looking at Motherwell because it’s a largish town with shops, supermarkets etc plus they have clubs for kids like gymnastics etc, would anyone recommend any other places what have things like this? Or if not what areas in Motherwell do we definitely avoid? Will be renting and have a maximum budget of around £600 and need a 2/3 bed.

Thanks ☺️

OP what about Balloch if you like Helensburgh. There are some lovely houses, it's right beside Loch Lomond and the scenery is lovely.
