Moving to Buxton

Hello there

We’ve bitten the bullet an decided Buxton is the answer to our competing family needs. Problem being I can’t seem to find any information about where the baby and pre-school groups are? I’m getting a bit concerned I’m going to end up with no friends at this rate!

Does anyone know where people take their toddlers to groups?

Here’s hoping you can help!

Buxton, Derbyshire? Try getting info from the library or if you can head to Macclesfield!

MarthasGinYard · 15/03/2018 23:54

No help I'm afraid but lucky you

I love Buxton

Enjoy your new home Thanks

Thank you! I’m struggling a bit... I’ve found one group so hopefully things can emerge from there... I am trusting that once you’re in an area it’s easier to found out more! People seem really nice tho ;)

Could you confirm for sure whether you mean Norfolk or Derbyshire?

I'm assuming you mean the latter, as you did not react to the post by concerned but am asking in case you mean the former. Which is great at primary age, bit not so good with older DC.

If you mean Buxton in Derbyshire then definitely visit or contact the library. There's loads going on there. You can have a look on the library section of Derbyshire County Council website, also look at the Children's Centre information on the website and they will signpost you to local groups. Oh and buy some good quality snow clothes and boots/4x4/sledges!!

Sorry, yes Buxton Derbyshire. We have very small children and my husband loves climbing, walking and generally all things outdoors! I think it’s probably too quiet for teenagers... luckily we are keen snowboarders and skiers so we’ve got the kit! It’s part of the attraction for us, snowed in winters - nice memories for our children later on! (At least I’m hopeful and optimistic in equal measure!!)

Thank you for the advice - I think I’ll be taking up those suggestions!!

If you're on Facebook there is a group called "Buxton babies" which isn't just babies it's all kids and group stuff.

Buxton is my local town. It's quiet but nice.

Allchange37 · 16/03/2018 10:21

thanks lovely- I’ll look into that!! It’s a very pretty town! People keep telling me us really hard to get to, I just don’t understand you can be in Macclesfield on a train and in London in 2 hours! Least I’m hoping so....

The cat and fiddle road from Buxton to Macclesfield is quite dangerous and gets shut off with snow or strong winds.

The Buxton train line takes an hour to get to Manchester.
You can change at Stockport for a lot of places but that takes about 50 minutes.

Driving is a must. You can feel very cut off otherwise.

Dontlikeflumps · 16/03/2018 16:04

There are loads of baby and pre-school groups. I believe that the NCT run a parent and toddler group and there are also quite a few others. There's also a soft play place called 'Little Rascals'- typical soft play place but full of parents and small children if you're stuck for someone to chat too. If you're around in the Summer there are loads of children's activities in the park/arts centre. If you're happy to get involved with things you'll find it quite easy to meet people.

If you like the outdoors activities and are not put off by the lack of city life it's probably just right for you. For a small town there are actually some pretty good amenities.

As you say, you can be in London on a train from Macclesfield in under 2 hours if you feel the need but the road to Macclesfield can be....interesting. Buxton is quite near to quite a few bigger towns/cities but the roads are not great so it can take a while to do a fairly short journey.

Allchange37 · 16/03/2018 20:24

Thank you so much! Really helpful guidance and I feel much better about our choice, kinda reinforces my gut feeling.

Re: the roads so it’s the fact they are bendy and single carriageway and prone to bad conditions that’s the issue... I guess my lifestyle will have to compensate for that... but an extra bit of time to get onto a motorway doesn’t phase me too badly.... yet! Wink

EffthisS · 16/03/2018 23:43

Some of the roads are bendy but the main issue for me is that the roads heading out can get busy.

To get from Buxton to the M60 ring road which is the way to a lot of places is about 24 miles but can take a couple of hours. It's very frustrating. (4 and a half hours once. When it snowed a bit)

They are building a bypass to get to the airport and M56 which might help with congestion a bit.

However Buxton is a lovely place to live. So its worth it. I'm glad I'm bringing my kids up not far away.

EffthisS · 16/03/2018 23:44

I did put paragraphs in. Annoying.

BonnieF · 17/03/2018 00:00

Buxton is a nice town, but to me it always feels like it’s in the wrong county. It’s closer to Manchester than Derby, and it definitely feels like it’s in the North, rather than the Midlands.

Allchange37 · 20/03/2018 12:08

Thanks for all the very helpful advice - really grateful! I must confess I accept that Buxton has its own climate but I think it’s such a nice start for children! I might bump into you EffthisS.... you never know!

Take care and thanks again!! Smile
