I know three lecturers/tutors at The Guildhall music school who live out on the Essex/London loop end of the central line and commute into Liverpool Street. It's quick and housing is much cheaper.

By privately owned, I mean that random young people can rent a room within a student flat Grin, so that might be an option?

(So: Newbury Park, Chigwell, Barkingside, Ilford areas. Very suburban.)

I think anywhere in London will have high crime statistics but just because you live there you won't be a victim. We lived for 10 years on Peckham borders, loads of reports of gang stuff and stabbings but nothing ever happened to us.

The main thing is to be sensible. There is lots of advice about staying safe in London for students on university and met police websites.

However the only thing I would be more concerned about in your DD case is who the other people are living in the house. Anybody and his dog is a young professional these days - it doesn't mean a thing and she could be unhappy stuck with a load of housemates that she doesn't know, like or have anything in common with or worse still dishonest or weirdos. We had a house full of YPs living next door to us in London for a while and they were loud, roudy, inconsiderate and rude.

Maybe to start off with she might be more comfortable living with a family whose teens have fled the nest. There are plenty of family homes in London with spare rooms - I'd look at spare room.com

Sorry - just seen you got it off Spare Room & when I looked at spare room you can't select by family home so probably not much help.
