Refused handshake.

So I'm new to the Gloucestershire/ Cheltenham area. I was born and grew up in London, not once in my life have I felt conscious of the colour of my skin, until yesterday when I was blatantly refused a handshake with a glaring look of disgust during a visit to a property. I just wanted to ask is this something I'm likely to face more of in the area will my son be rejected because of racial differences? I am not going to judge an entire area on one bad experience but I'd like to get honest opinions from others.

I can't speak on behalf of Cheltenham /Glocestershire as I don't know the area but I suspect the person who refused your hand was just a knob and also not representative of the area. I really hope your first impressions of the place improve and you meet some lovely people to make up for the unpleasant one you met yesterday.

I have a cousin who lives near Cheltenham. Her husband is from Africa (and I feel really bad now because I can't remember exactly which country) and they have never had a problem at all.

This is not representative of the area. I'm Gloucester born and bred but have lived in Sheffield and Nottingham too and can say Gloucester is certainly not a racist city. Obviously Gloucester/Cheltenham is a big area and without knowing where you are specifically I can't comment on the racial diversity of where you live - some areas being much "whiter" than others just like anywhere - but don't panic because you happened to meet a wanker!

I'm from just outside of Cheltenham (Ciren) and I've never experienced this nor Have I witnessed this disgusting behaviour towards my friends who are racially different to me. I think you just encountered a single cockwomble and it won't happen again. It's hard to understand that people can still be this way, he's a dick

I live in Glos. This person was clearly an arse. Most of us aren't. I'm sorry you were treated in such a rubbish way.

My DDs grandparents (fathers side) are from there and in my experience they definitely are like that (that was then the beginning of the end of that relationship)

Complain to head office. Even if there was another reason they refused the handshake you need to make it clear how it made you feel.
I owuld think any person who is employed and makes money by interacting with people in any manner should be taught tact, manners and to keep any horrible opinions to themselves.
