Adult with ADHD - need advice

So, I have an adult daughter who is 20. She was diagnosed with ADHD at 6 years old and was medicated at this point. It helped her to learn to read and write etc and honestly was a game changer for her.

She stopped taking the medication when she was 14 as she felt she didn't need it anymore.

She is now 20 and things have gone downhill massively recently. She's at uni full time, although she's only actually timetabled in one day a week. She has a part time job as a waitress but it isn't working for her. Being around people seems to completely exhaust her and she has been taking antidepressants prescribed by the GP for a few months now, albeit a low dose.

She has told me recently that she has been self harming and has had suicidal thoughts. I am obviously so upset by this and need to know how to help her. I thought trying the ADHD meds again might be a plan but she insists the issues are not linked.

Are there any adults on here with ADHD or with knowledge in general on the condition? I am so worried about her. She is really struggling. I think she will need to give up the job as it's not working for her. She is trying to stay employed as she is really enjoying learning to drive etc but, it's just not working.

I just want her to be healthy and happy again. Any advice at all is welcome.

Hi OP. Sorry to hear your DD is struggling so much. Can she not let the pt waitressing job go for a while, at least until she’s in a better place mentally? It does seem to be taking it out of her working and studying, so it will at least take that added pressure off.

ADHD medication never worked for my DD but she is on low ADs. She does want to come off them, but I’ve got concerns. I do think she needs to speak with her Doctor, and if she doesn’t want to go back on ADHD medication she can look at higher dose of ADs. It is difficult, I know.

Thanks for the reply. My Daughter is on low dose ADs also but she seems to actually be getting worse.

She's going into work tomorrow to speak to them about either taking an extended break, if possible, or leaving completely.

Why won’t she have medication or try a different medication. I would have thought the medication options will have improved since she was young.
Did she try Concerta which my daughter takes.
