Figures I've heard are £1000 - £2000 for assessment then £250 costs ongoing for check ups and medication monthly. The option for shared care seems to be a thing of the past now as well with basically no NHS Gp's agreeing to it now.

Wow that is depressing.

@Whingy Yeah its for a lot of things I think not just ADHD. People are paying out to get the diagnosis and to trial meds and then being unable to move to shared care as the GP won't accept then without an NHS diagnosis and the waiting lists for assessments are literally years and years long to the point where a diagnosis will likely never happen. You need to be able to pay for it all yourself now I think.

This was certainly the case for me, and more as I had bad reactions to two of the meds and had to swap instantly. Obviously couldn't get a refund. Titration of various meds never resulted in a therapeutic outcome.

I then developed a heart issue as a direct result of methylphenidate and ended up in A&E. I wasn't looked on particularly kindly by the doctors that treated me.

I didn't cope well on any of the medication. In fact, it made me "worse", highly jittery, anxious, mood swings or extremely depressed and paranoid. Eventually the private company became uncontactable,
having taken money in advance for a year of treatment then transfer over to shared care.

They were later on the news for handing out diagnoses willy nilly. When I got my report from them, via my GP, they'd falsified the evidence that was the basis of diagnosis. They'd written things like "was very disruptive in school,
struggles to make and keep friends". When I'd told them over and over that I'd been seen as a model pupil by teachers, and I have a great,
supportive friendship circle and make friends easily.

I now consider the ADHD diagnosis from them to be unsound. I think they just wanted the money. Please be careful. The NHS may take years longer, but they won't steal your money.

Our assessment was about £1200. And about £300 per appointment for follow up and titration of meds etc. There's no NHS shared care option in our area so every month we have to pay £50 for a local private GP to write a prescription for meds and another £50 for the meds at the chemist. Have been told that it will be at least another 9-12 months before DS can be assessed on NHS and thus get access to NHS prescription services.

Goodness. Worse than I thought. Is it possible to get a free assessment via 'right to choose' - to save NHS waiting time or do you have to pay for that part? And then suck up the meds costs?

I was diagnosed via right to choose, took about 18 months I think. Just about to start the meds now, but there was a wait for that as well. It didn't cost me for the assessment and it won't for the meds, once they have my meds right I'll be referred back to my doctors to prescribe the meds

Thanks for the thread. We are looking to get our DD assessed but been told it will be at least 3 years on the NHS. I'm wary of private assessments but wondered if anyone had good experiences too. Cost is obviously an issue. Did the assessment, meds help people or are we best to spend our time helping with coping strategies.
