Tv - Patience. Anyone relating to her?

I'm just watching the new detective drama Patience. Patience is autistic.
I know ASD is a spectrum (Me and daughter are diagnosed), but I personally have never come across anyone like her.
I'm wondering if anyone can relate to her character?

Have you seen the French version Astrid (channel 4 player)? Same story, acting a bit different.

screamingsiblings · 08/01/2025 21:59

no - is it good?

It's interesting. Although tiring to watch something with subtitles I find. The dynamic between the characters is different although the same things happen. Watchable. Still not made my mind up.

screamingsiblings · 08/01/2025 22:37

ok. Thanks.
What do you think about the way Patience is depicted?

I saw this advertised and wondered if it was a British version of Astrid. Is it different enough to keep DH interested who's seen the French version already (I haven't)?

eyestosee · 08/01/2025 22:56

@screamingsiblings I think Patience is believable as a character so far. But then I don't see anyone as representative of ASD. You can see she displays some traits.

@dingledangledoos depends whether he is curious to see different versions. Story lines pretty much identical.

eyestosee · 08/01/2025 22:57

In that different individuals can have ASD and it manifests in various ways.

AmIPatience · 08/01/2025 23:20

I relate to her in so many ways and think she is fab.

I have long questioned where on the spectrum I am, now I know I am at the Patience end.

Cant wait to see how her storyline develops.

purpleme12 · 08/01/2025 23:26

The actress who plays Patience has ASD herself.
The crew are either ND themselves or closely
related to someone that is or in a relationship with someone that is.

The actress who plays Astrid is NT.

I've binged watched the lot...think Patience is a fantastic character

thesaskedminger · 09/01/2025 21:32

Im really looking forward to watching this.

What would the rough age suitability be?

AmIPatience · 09/01/2025 21:54

Am really loving Patience’s Jacket. Does anyone have any idea where it is from?

Charleyfarley95 · 09/01/2025 23:08

I'm so sad I wanted to love it but after watching "Astrid" the original French series from Walter Presents first and being a fan of that, it just isn't as good. Bea is boring but trying to be a rebel in the English version whereas French version is edgy and dynamic. Patience and yes I know English actress is ND but Astrid was acted amazingly close to students I work with every day. So sorry French version is best acting and stories are told better

AnOldCynic · 09/01/2025 23:08

Just came onto MN to see if anyone else has been watching. I feel I should have a bingo card for stereotypical autistic behaviours... nothing subtle about it unlike Saga Norén in The Bridge. Feels a bit overkill just 30 minutes in but I'll bear with it. Agree the lead is a nice character.

I thought this, but then maybe they felt they had to make it obvious for the neurotypicals who wouldn’t understand the behaviour?

I definitely feel this way internally a lot of the time but I think mask much more effectively (no criticism of her). So I could sit down in a canteen and make small talk ok.

one thing though which (to me) was wrong…..when the female police officer said to her “why are you asking me that”. My immediate response (and I’d have thought would have been hers) would have been “because I want to know the answer”. But patience gave a detailed explanation of the reasoning behind the question.

I agree. I love the way Astrid and Rafaelle are together. There's a vulnerability about Astrid that makes her more endearing than Patience and Bea is so bland compared with Rafaelle. Maybe we've unwittingly spoilt it for ourselves by having watched Astrid first. I suppose people who start with Patience might find it difficult to adapt to watching Astrid, but so far the English version is a poor imitation. Will try to stick with it though to see if I start to warm to the characters. I'm also missing Arthur and Nico!

screamingsiblings · 10/01/2025 16:59

Yes Saga was great I thought too. Much more subtle like many of us have learnt to be by the time we're adults.

I saw more aspects of myself in the other people at the support group than Patience herself.

Perhaps because they chose to focus on the most common issues autistic adults face .

CanIGetAHighFive · 14/01/2025 15:46

I think the writing is terrible. It feels very stereotypical. However, how she walks around people and some of her mannerisms towards others are so very me it was actually affirming to see. I love that some of the actors are autistic. The dialogue in the whole thing is just painful to listen to. I'd love to see a series about an undiagnosed mum in the middle of a breakdown/ burnout in an undiagnosed family coming to the realisation that she and everyone around her in neurodivergent, without clichés.

If you watch the original, Astrid: Murder in Paris, it is subtitled and you can put your own spin on how Astrid delivers her lines and I think that makes the dialogue more personal and better all round. I'm finding it hard to accept some of the ways in which Patience says certain things because of that I think. Getting bit more used to her now but still much prefer Astrid and Rafaelle as a duo than Patience and Bea. You can find all series on 4 if you're interested.

Agree, it's sadly hugely clunky and feeds the ASC information to people with a mallet. It feels patronising. I absolutely hated the ways that the neurotypicals spoke about her in the first episode, and how they had to speak to her godfather. They breached her confidentiality in so many ways and assumed lack of capacity, including Bea attending her support group. That would go straight to HR for me. I found some of it pretty offensive which is a shame because I really wanted to love it. My husband thought it would be a treat for me, but it's making me pretty grumpy.

Try Astrid. I don't know if it's because it's subtitled, but it doesn't feel at all patronising. The 'patronisers' are there deliberately, to show their own ignorance. They and Astrid learn a lot from each other, which is the beauty of it really. Their 'Bea' character, Raphaelle, goes to the AA group invited I seem to remember. I found it quite shocking Bea just turned up.

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 19/01/2025 15:34

I'm really liking this now.

I also got cross about confidentiality and being stalked by a colleague to a support group.

I agree it's all ticking stereotypes but I'm constantly amazed with people I work with how little people know about autism so maybe spelling it out isn't bad.

And the getting aomethingnwrong/ rejection /blacknand white thinking/end of the world in episode 4 I think it was was something I related to strongly and thought I'd not seen on TV before.

It was nice to see the representation but it is very obvious in the way Geek Girl was too (ironically asthat was written before the author realises she was autistic!)

In real life I don't have a manager that's so patient and a job that let's me have this much freedom umfortunately!

@CanIGetAHighFive "

Ha yes....my kids are now diagnosed and I'm on a waiting list but losing my career at pace!

I saw an interview with the actress and did like that it's just one representation of an autistic woman. Every woman is different etc etc. Is love a second series now they've done all the spelling out bits!

GoingOffScript · 24/03/2025 19:24

I had to switch off. As a person diagnosed with asd late in life, I couldn’t relate in any way.
