Adhd assessment picked up on austim

I am late 30's and recently went for a adhd assessment. During this, the lady picked up that I may have austim also. Was pretty blown away to be honest as I was so hyper focused on adhd, austim never entered my mind. When she explained about it and my traits, I was astonished. Another another assessment to go through before it's confirmed. Has anyone been diagnosed with both?

Lots and lots of people. I would go so far to say most neurodivergent people have more than one facet.

I think one of the reasons so many women are late diagnosed is because they have both and the traits counteract against each other in many ways until they don't.

KeyKnowledge · 29/11/2024 17:11

Yes, this was how it was for my adult DD.

We are very grateful and she is now thriving.

ffsgloria · 29/11/2024 22:36

Yes I have both. It may have gone un-noticed for so long as the two can almost mask each other. After a LOT of research I worked out I likely had both, & found an assessor who would look at everything at once, & both were confirmed.

I have a ND friend who believes there is so much crossover they may eventually become one condition.

I'm 30 next month and I also have just been diagnosed with ADHD and at my assessment the woman told me she thinks it's also autism and to get an assessment for that.

ADHD has a lot of co-occurring conditions. The list is quite extensive but includes ASD and dyslexia.
AuDHD as it is known can present with more diverse differences than either ASD or ADHD alone.
I was diagnosed with dyslexia decades ago, the more recently ADHD when I was 50, and then ASD.
It explained a lot in my life!

Butterfliesandsugar · 30/11/2024 13:47

@PenguinLover24 social anxiety from a very young age was the reasoning for her thinking I had austim. Even now I hide away from social gatherings. I just thought I was odd and quiet.

@Quirky How do you manage with it? Apparently adhd medication can help with adhd but it also unmasks the austim more. I struggle most with emotional deregulation and social anxiety. If I could get to grips with them both, I could just about manage the rest. Sure who needs skin on their fingertips anyway 😃

@ffsgloria how do u manage them both? I'm very willing to try medication. Already on anti depressants which do not help. Pystristist said that non stim medication is basically same as SNRI's. I had thought non stimulant best for me as I have really bad anxiety. But after she said they are similar to snri and having the worse time on venlafanxine, I don't want to try them. Suppose they know best

My teen DS’s ADHD diagnosis came back with an Autism Assessment suggestion. We were unsure but then as I started answering the prescreen question I started to think about it more and then once his ADHD was medicated we saw a lot more of his ASD traits coming through.
It also explained a lot of his mental health challenges as his brain is constantly working against each other, ADHD wants to be go go go, ASD hits burn out, ADHD wants to be impulsive, ASD needs routine and structure etc.

Butterfliesandsugar · 30/11/2024 13:56

@KeyKnowledge happy for your DD

@Butterfliesandsugar I don't most of the time! I do all the boring stuff like healthy diet, hardly any alcohol, high intensity exercise, walk in nature, prioritise sleep, and have a very organised home. I have an anxiety disorder on top of AuDHD and life is pretty difficult at times, plus peri-menopause which is the gift that keeps giving, despite HRT. I was on anti depressants in the past and have thought about going back on them. I'm seeing a psychiatrist early next year to explore ADHD meds so we'll see how that works out.

My autism assessment picked up on ADHD traits. I eventually had an ADHD diagnosis but not autism.

Not very well until recently. Diagnosis opened my eyes and then I dived headlong into understanding it (hyper focus). Nearly 2 years later I am a qualified and accredited Executive Functions coach with over 300 hours of coaching behind me!
To share a quote from one of my coachee's "medication is like wearing glasses, but sometimes you cant stop staring. Coaching is like have roads signs or steps in a recipe, but you have to be willing to follow them."
