Money management with ADHD

UnimaginableWindBird · 27/10/2024 12:31

I have ADHD and so my finances are chaos. Like many late-diagnosed ADHD people, I find anything to do with money management inherently frightening, so neutral activities like opening my banking app to make a payment which I know I can afford make me panic.

I have made a lot of positive changes in my life, and would like to tackle my fear of finances stuff and get my finances in order.

Are there any tips, apps, routines etc that people find helpful, and which don't require a massive commitment or lots of admin?

I hear good things about Monzo, I'm not sure if that's just hype.

If you have ADHD and manage your finances effectively, how do you do it?

I have everything on direct debit / automatic payment otherwise I will definitely forget to pay something on time. I never have to go into my banking app to pay for anything. I have a very simple budgeting spreadsheet with all monthly recurring bills listed, and a misc category that has a set amount I can spend each month where I input any spending I do that isn’t part of monthly recurring costs. That way I don’t overspend.

I was thinking a very fancy spreadsheet would be good, but a very simple one would probably be better.

Spreadsheet review about once a year when I'm ready to hyper focus on it.
Don't have buying apps like vinted and Amazon on your phone.
Carry cash.

Direct debit everything

Earn more than you need.

I use YNAB, which is zero-based budgeting.

Allocating all my money into budget pots as soon as it comes in so I know what I can and can't spend on what is life-changing.

There's a long running thread on the Money Matters board if you want a referral or more details. There are facebook groups aimed at neurodivergent YNABers too.
