Does this sound like ASD?

My lovley DS is 4 and has just started school. My DB has autism and ADHD and pretty sure my DH has so I have always kept an eye out for signs - maybe somewhat to much.

When he was younger there were somethings that worried me such as late speech (came at the age of 2), he was obsessed with spinning things for a short time although this past.
Fast-forward to now and he is a lovley happy little boy. He loves making and playing with friends, has settled into school fine etc.
I spoke to his teacher today as he is obsessed with the titanic and ship wrecks, knows every fact possible. He has often had different obsessions over the years certain numbers if I didn't go to till number 8 he would have a meltdown , certain toys, planets. But with the titanic he can bring any conversation back to it. In school alls he will draw is boats.
His teacher says he is fine socially sometimes needs some encouragement and does try to bring boats into play.
He is also extremely fussy with food, I am pretty sure it's a sensory thing. He also holds his wee in (which my friend has told me can be a sign he never has accidents).
As I say he's social, copes with changes in routine fine (he did get upset when his Dad got a new car but nothing other than that), good eye contact, holds conversation pretty well (often try to engage with adults), plays with children, doesn't have tantrums. Should I be worried? I'm not worried if he has ASD, I just want to know to be able to give him the correct support. I know when my DB got his diagnosis it was a relief for him.
Thanks for reading!

Some things that you've mentioned like the spinning of wheels can be absolutely normal development and could he the Rotation Schema.

Personally I've not heard of holding wee as a sign of ASD.

How does he do on this very simple progress checker?

And is he just 4?

Planetsd · 14/10/2024 06:27

Sorry I missed this, thanks for coming back. He was 4 in May.

He scored yes to all the answers on this test I suppose it's mainly the obsession I'm worrying about.

It's really good that he's passed the Speech & Learning UK progress checker as often a difficulty with speech & language can be an indication that they need some support at school.

If you want a bit of a more in-depth progress checker you could try the social & emotional ages & stages.

Yeah

Autism is a spectrum, he doesn’t need to present with a severe form of it to be diagnosed

Planetsd · 29/10/2024 23:31

I know it's a spectrum i am just unsure if its a phase / age thing or something more . My DB struggled until his diagnosis and i dont want that. The school seem unconcerned I asked last week at parents evening and they said his focus on boats isn't taking away from learning.

Every online assessment i do he always scores fine on. I just want to do my best for him.

Basically I have no idea if I should push the school or see how he goes over the next year or so . Or if I should even be worried at all.

Or look for a private assessment .

How did he do on the Social & Emotional Ages & Stages that I linked to? Was that one fine too? Wink

Planetsd · 30/10/2024 08:17

@PolaroidPrincess he's absolutely fine on all of them questions . The only one is food but he doesn't stuff it in or vomit. He's just fussy x
