DD8 dyslexia

DD8 just had utter meltdown as school won't let her be a free reader.

When school restarted 2w ago she was on book band 5. I asked them how / when she could move up (in the hopes of getting to free reader at some point) and they have tested her again today and moved her to book band 7.

I'm really glad they are helping her but she's the only dyslexic child in her class and feels isolated and hates that she's the only kid not free reading.

She wants to take in Wigglesbottom Primary books to read.

She says she will refuse the book band book.

Has anyone been in the position with their DC?

It's breaking my heart how hard she has to work, how much she struggles (not just with reading) and how far she still has to go :(

I try and tell her that whatever happens in school she will do great because she has so many other strong and amazing skills. I'm dyslexic too but I never had her challenges as in the 80s schools were very different and kids were not being constantly measured, plus I grew up abroad.

Hi, sorry your daughter is feeling like this . Does she know she is dyslexic?
My daughter who's 8yrs old has dyslexia and we didn't tell her straight away , but she kept coming out of school saying why can everyone else do it she's so stupid etc etc, so we decided that was the time to tell her , since then she has been much more relaxed less frustrated with herself, I told her she can do it , it's just her brain sees things and sometimes works a bit differently to others which makes her really clever , but it will just take her a little bit longer to work out how to get there.
That's really good that she has moved up in bands, I've always said to the school that I want my daughter to gain confidence in the work she's going and move up gradually , as if she's pushed too hard and struggles she will want to stop trying. It's hard isn't it finding that middle ground.

If she is on book band 7, she really isn't capable of free reading chapter books. It will be completely overwhelming for her. My DD 7 is on the same level, and we suspect dyslexia.

She can read books like Wigglesbottom primary with minimal help 🤷🏻‍♀️

Will see when she comes back from club if there's been any fall out with her refusing to read book band books

My daughters school goes on understanding the story/book and what they are reading aswell as being able to read the words they do an accelerated reader thing. Maybe that's what the teachers are looking/waiting for aswell
