Considering ASD assessment - NHS/private?

Hey everyone

I'm considering making a GP appointment to take the fist step towards getting an assessment for ASD. I'm nearly 40, F, no learning difficulties, lots of family with ASD (either diagnosed or significant traits), lots of history of MH issues, possibly misdiagnosed in the past. I've long considered myself to have traits of ASD but had a few 'lightbulb moments' recently re: masking and socialising.

I wouldn't say I'm sure I have ASD at all, but I do feel that it's a distinct possibility that I want to explore. I don't fit the stereotype of 'monotone man with one special interest' (sorry I know that's probably massively offensive but I couldn't think of a way to get that point across) but I identify a LOT with the experiences of late-diagnosed women I've read about.

Anyway, my questions are... Are NHS diagnostic services typically any good for women like me (like us)? Eg who are practised at masking. Are private diagnoses worthwhile? I suppose I worry about the 'paying for a diagnosis' accusation. I don't mind waiting a couple of years for the NHS but I don't really want to wait if they're going to be totally dismissive iyswim.

Tldr: If you're a masking adult woman with potential ASD, is it better to pursue an NHS or a private assessment?

Thank you for getting that far!

I just used these (refered via nhs) but they do private to https://psychiatry-uk.com.
Took 13 months from gp referal to diagnosis. I also mask well and have a family history.
Dc nhs Dr who assessed recommended going nhs as you have to be very careful as some private firms aren't great she said so becareful who you choose as a diagnosis might not be accepted by nhs etc.

Psychiatry UK - Online Psychiatry - Private Psychiatric Services

GMC registered psychiatrists - specialists in Adult and Child ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, Stress, Addictions etc - online consultations - full psychiatric reports - diagnosis and recommendations for treatment - online booking

Thank you @Pleaseleavemealone0 that's really helpful. Am feeling a bit overwhelmed by the options in terms of right to choose etc, so I think I'm going to treat my initial GP appointment as a chance to talk through my thoughts and then get their advice on how to move forward with a referral. I was assuming I'd be waiting 2.5years+ on the NHS so I'd be happy enough with anything under that... I'm a bit nervous about the GP appointment (have had incredibly varied experiences in the past) but I think I need to just accept that even if this appointment doesn't go well, it's a process.
