I rang the drs today. I had 3 things:

  1. DS HPV vaccination
  2. Check if I needed a smear
  3. Appt to ask for referral for ASD and ADHD assessment for me.

In the time I was on hold I figured out that I wasn't due a smear for another year, booked the vaccine but then chickened out of asking for a time for the referral. The receptionist sounded so brusque - I'm not in the UK and they tend to be a bit more human and I think it really threw me. Why am I dithering about this?

It's a big deal and I 100% why u r, I need to fill in forms for my daughters asd and adhd referral but I'm putting it off so know exactly as I have adhd and that's a very adhd thing to do! Which is ironic , it took me about 6 months from when I wanted to make referral to when I actually did for me due to the adhd causing me to procrastinate! I even joked with doctor about it at appointment!

It’s completely understandable. It’s nervewracking. It’s the first step in getting a definitive answer and you can’t be sure what the answer will be or what it mean to you and how you’ll feel. There’s also an element of feeling like you’re revealing something very personal to the receptionist. No one feels inclined to reveal personal things to someone they don’t feel comfortable with.

But look, you’ve tackled two out of three things on your list. That’s great. You’ve achieved something important. Now to go back and pick up that phone (or go in) and sort out the referral. If you’ve only got one thing to ask about, you won’t forget or chicken out as that’s the whole reason you phoned. You’ll feel so pleased once it’s done. Do it tomorrow!

3 things is a lot to ask in one go,
in the UK I think we now have a one issue per appointment policy.. it definitely makes me nervous when I have more than one question when I call.

I wouldn't worry - treat it as a separate call and do it again this week.

Well done for prioritising too.

Yes, I agree with 2024horizons.

You did vv well to book the vaccine! Tick it off the list.

Try again today or tomorrow or on Monday for the referral.

Sometimes I find writing myself a little script helps. This is because I'm abroad and I have to do it not in English but perhaps you are too.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 08/03/2024 14:50

Omg I had NOTHING in my work calendar today and I forgot again. Try again Monday afternoon I think.

Would a reminder help, or do you dismiss them like me Grin

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 10/03/2024 07:21

It usually does if I put it in my work calendar.

I was reminded at work through something completely unrelated that I could book online and bypass the receptionist. So I've done it!
