Adults with ADHD - medication

Hello,

I've been diagnosed with ADHD and ASC fairly recently (approx 1.5-2 years ago). I was offered medication at the time for ADHD but declined it. However, I now feel like I need to try this out. Struggling with binge eating, inattention, distractibility etc.

However, I know there are huge shortages in the medication I want to try (Elvanse). Also I'm wary about side effects and how it will interact with my ASC.

So, the following questions are on my mind:

  • Do you take medication and if so, how is it?
  • How did you go about getting the medication? I've gone back to my GP to ask them to re refer to Psychiatry UK for titration.
  • How long did it take to get meds?
  • If you have both ASC and ADHD how did medication impact?
  • Any tactics to keep things under control in the meantime?

On the surface, people would be shocked to find out about my diagnoses. I present at calm, level and extremely organised. I work at professional level in a college with young people in care and young people with ADHD/SEMH/ASC.

However under the surface a lot of the children's behaviours resonate with me and I if I am not careful to maintain a very balanced system I can present as chaotic/irritable/overwhelmed etc when I get home. It's a lot.

Also interested just to hear from people (especially women) with dual diagnosis.

Thanks x

Just placemarking @ADHDASCBAMEWoman. Both DC are ND and I've realised they most if my struggles through life are because I probably am too.

I'm hoping we get a response at some point lol 😅

If you aren't on Elvanse already, you won't get it until the shortage is resolved.

I thought that may be the case but I'm hopeful it isn't!
