Hey everyone. This is my first post. My Son is almost 20 and I have known since he was really young he was different in some way. It was hard work but never bad enough to go to the GP, we coped. However the last 3-4 years since puberty set in, things have become really difficult. He's highly intelligent, did very well in his last 2 years at high school. He's just started a new job and seems to be enjoying it. We have the following concerns: he goes through a lot of friends, no one seems to stick around for long. He goes though a lot of partners, again after a few months things fizzle out. The issue seems to be that he cannot show any emotion, I have known this for years. He doesn't understand how people feel and he knows he is different. He has a very short attention span unless its something he is interested in, then he's almost fixated. He has no filter at times and says things that are quite inappropriate and doesn't even get embarrassed. He doesn't like to be hugged/touched unless he's had alcohol. He assures me this doesn't affect the physical side of any relationships. This is now really affecting his relationships with his partners where they think he just doesn't care. I see it and its heart breaking. Aswell as this, he's moods are so irratic. He's either hyper (like 100 miles an hour, scrape you off the ceiling) or he's so low and crabbit. It can happen like flicking a switch. I feel like we as his family have to walk on eggshells. His personality can change in a heartbeat. The strange thing is, he can feel emotion. He can't watch an animal cruelty advert as it upsets him. For years I have been asking him to see the GP and now finally he has agreed. Its now affecting things with his current partner. Thankfully his work have private medical cover so he can be referred for a neuro diverse assessment. I just wondered if anyone else has been in our situation and what the diagnosis was? Sometimes, I think ADHD, sometimes mild autism but there are other conditions which he ticks some boxes with. Any comments welcome. xx
