Hi,
I'm hoping someone can point my in the right direction with my DS21 and please excuse me if I use incorrect terminology.
He's waiting for an autism investigation, the wheels are moving slowly.
He is ND but I'm not sure how to help him.
He (and I) want him to have a complete neurological/ psychological assessment. Like a MOT for his brain.
It feels like because we don't know what he has, we can't deal with it, if that makes any sense?
When talking to HCP over the years, it's been hard to convey his issues.
I'm lost (and probably ND too)
Happy to go private as we are getting nowhere with local services.
Can anyone advise?
Thank you 😊

Never seen a comprehensive assessment in the way you describe. Normally you would either go for a ADHD or Autism diagnosis but I've heard you can get dual assessments. I had mine separately. The first one, ASD assessment, was in person local to me. Second was my ADHD assessment which was through Clinical Partners via video but they do have centres dotted across the UK.

Personally I believe ADHD and ASD are the same thing so all on a spectrum which is why I think sometimes it can be hard to tell what someone as/is. Even if it's two separate things there are a lot people with both.

When budgeting for private you have to consider follow up appointments and medication and prescribing costs if ADHD. However most GPs will take on a shared care agreement eventually.

Another option is to choose a clinic that offers Right to Choose. That way the NHS pays the costs of the assessment but you get shorter waiting times as it's via a private clinic.

I tried to have similar but in the end was diagnosed with autism then had an ADHD assessment and then spoke to a psychiatrist to be diagnosed cPTSD.

No clinician was at all interested in anything but 'their bag'

Frustrating but common I think

Thank you both for replying, that's really helpful.
In his own words, he needs to be able to name what is wrong with him, in order to cope.
He wants to be able to understand, I behave/react like because I have XYZ
I really appreciate you both helping 😊

The waiting time for a NHS autism assessment can be up to five years. If you haven’t done so already I recommend asking the GP to switch him to another provider through Right to Choose. He should get assessed in 6-8 months.

Apart from that, you could self refer to Talking Changes for counselling to discuss his issues. I don’t think you can get a “complete psychological assessment” though. You will always be referred to investigate one suspected condition at a time.

Try https://www.additudemag.com/symptom-checker/ mine came back with five different possible conditions.

Yeah I did this it thinks I have OCD and Tourette's when actually I'm autistic and have movement tics and repetitive behaviour as part of that.

I would take it with a pinch of salt. A very big one.
