What is the correct answer when someone says this?

Firstly, please don’t anyone take offence to this, I really am trying to be kind.

What are you supposed to say when someone complains to you that they have out on loads of weight or they are fat or on a diet when they are overweight?

I assume the correct answer is “no you’re not” but then they respond with “yes I am” and where do you go from there?

This has happened to me several times recently and I don’t have a clue what I’m supposed to say. Something supportive or is “no you’re not” the correct answer? It feels disingenuous when they know full well they are overweight but it would be very unkind to agree with them!

Hmm.. I’d try to fudge it with a nondescript comment like ‘You look great’

Ah I like that thank you 😊.

I would usually pick up on the expressed feeling e.g. ‘oh, that sounds frustrating!’ Mind you, then the problem can be that you encourage them to say a lot more. 😂

I wouldn't say 'no you're not' if they very obviously were. They'd just feel patronised. I agree with pp about sympathising with the expressed feeling. If they say they are on a diet, you could ask what diet they are doing.

If they aren't obviously overweight I would go with the 'you look great' option.
