Hi everyone! My DS is 2 and is on the waiting list for ASD diagnosis. He has always struggled with sleep but for the past few months we managed to establish (a long overdue) nap and bedtime routine. A couple of weeks ago he suddenly stopped napping and also started taking around 2 hours to fall asleep in the evenings. I’ve given up trying with the daytime nap but in the evening he goes to bed at 7:30 but isn’t falling asleep until 9:30/10pm and awake in the morning by 6am. He doesn’t fuss when in his cot but we’ve noticed on the monitor after being in bed for 15/20 mins he has started trying to climb out which is a huge worry for us as he does not yet have any awareness of danger (he has always been a climber!!) We’re not sure whether the safest option for him would be to transition to a toddler bed (but then have the fear of him being able to freely roam around his bedroom where he could endanger himself more) or stick with the cot and just offer a later bedtime so that he’s ready to sleep as soon as he’s put in? We also have 2 DD who have a later bedtime so when DS is in bed, it’s their chance in the evening to spend some time with us without the shared attention of DS (he is very demanding 😂) i’d hate for these later bedtimes to impact on them and feel like they’re never getting any alone time with mum & dad. I know all children are different so beginning to wonder if he simply does not need as much sleep as other children his age. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Will the transition from cot to bed make things worse?
