Cutlery aversion as a child

As a kid I HATED eating off cutlery that wasn't ours, I can't quite describe it but it was like it was wrong/dirty. Obviously being a people pleaser I never actually said this to any adults but I'd be very careful not to touch the cutlery with my mouth, just the food. I had a 'special spoon' which was mine and always used it. I also hated washing my teeth when we were away from home, as I didn't like the idea of the strange water. Nothing to do with the taste per se - just the feel/thought of it.

I trained myself out of both things as I grew up but given the option eg at work there are still certain cutlery utensils that make me feel a bit icky and I avoid them (forks that are too heavy or too light, spoons that are too big...).

I've only really thought of this recently and wondered if it's something others experience(d)?

I have issues with cutlery full stop and if I can eat with my hands is much easier for me so yes I can understand that 🙂

Ah the water for cleaning teeth. DD uses a bottle of water if she is away from home/at work as she cannot use 'other' water!

I haven't ever seen anyone else say this until now!

'Other water' I totally get. My eldest drinks out of the bathroom tap Envy (not envy)

I wouldn't wash my hands in public loos as a child. How I never got I'll I don't know.

I also had a special spoon. I still miss it.

I remember my mum had a canteen of cutlery that she used for 'best' that I wouldn't use. They were silver and tasted of metal.

I also never liked the plastic handled ones or the ones that felt too heavy. The very cheap light and flimsy ones feel bad too.

I need medium weight, not too big or small stainless steel.

Disposable cutlery is the worst, especially the environmental wooden ones. I cannot put a wooden fork/spoon in my mouth 🤢

I had the same thing. Hates eating out for this reason — I just kept thinking nothing had been cleaned properly.

I also hated sitting on seats if I knew other people had sat there before me and I didn’t know who they were for instance bus seats. No idea why.

All this is kind of weird because I have never been a neat freak or a germaphobe.

Hated not hates.

Thanks for the replies, nice to know others have/had the same thing or similar! Just one of those little personal quirks I hadn't thought about for a while...

Carry a Light My Fire titanium eating tool and never have to use disposable cutlery again.
