I thought you would be interested in this from Adweek.com...

So glad more awareness is being made for us.

I think it's a bit of an odd one and doesn't quite convey what its actually like.

You are right though, any awareness is good.

Oh really in what way?

I've not been attached to clothing.
Could not listen to those drums.
Was not confident at school.

I can't put my finger on what, but I agree with Priti, just didn't feel very authentic to me. Can't really explain my reaction to it and I'm sure others will look at it completely differently!

But being an autistic woman, I absolutely agree, more awareness is always welcome.

It doesn't ring true for me either - her peers were too kind to her for a start, as sad as that is.

Hmm showed this to my autistic daughter. She said that now everyone will feel that all autistic people have Tourette's. (Because they are thick apparently ). I see her point but it's impossible to depict all autistic people in one advert. Idk I'm glad they've tried to do so. I'm not autistic but it made me cry watching it actually. My daughter wasn't bullied at school but also she was undiagnosed at the time and didn't get any actual autism support

My DD is autistic, I’m not (I don’t think!). The ad makes me cry every time a watch it. It just looks like how our family is. The effect it has on her siblings, the mum and dad trying to smooth the way “put the subtitles on” “the traffic is quieter on Fridays”, the mum wanting to hug her but not being able to. The sister having to be quiet in the car.
My dd watching it couldn’t see any of that. She could only see it from the autistic girl’s point of view - of course, as she’s autistic herself. She really liked Ash and wants to be her friend.
I feel so much for my dd and am so sorry for her with her struggles, I am also sorry for my other dc and the effect it has on them.

I think it's good on the fact that it raises awareness.

What bugged me though is that my daughter is not a genius. She isn't getting all the answers correct. She is actually behind due to school attendance and het anxiety. She would never put her hand up and draw attention to herself.

I think it runs the risk of stereotyping to Sheldon and Rainman. While this can be the case particularly as it is harder to diagnose in girls.

RoyGBivisacolorfulman · 09/04/2023 19:55

Point is some people may think my child isn't autuas they aren't clever.

RoyGBivisacolorfulman · 09/04/2023 19:55

Isn't!

RoyGBivisacolorfulman · 09/04/2023 20:28

Autistic even! 🤦‍♀️

Manicpixidreamgirl · 10/04/2023 14:00

I hadn’t seen the advert until this thread. I think it’s brilliant for raising awareness. Thank you for sharing it. The fact that she’s a high flyer at school but has outbursts at home demonstrates ‘masking’ to a tee. The mum trying to hug her really resonated with me. The ticing as well. I feel the advert showed the ‘behind the scenes’ parts of autistic life really well. It’s not perfect but autism is so broad you’ll never hit the nail on the head in one advert anyway.
