Diagnosis for work?

I am early fifties, certain I have Asperger's / high intellect autism, as it runs in the family and I have all the signs. Online quizzes say I do. Two brothers are diagnosed.

I just got made redundant during a departmental restructure as the other candidate had "better social skills", despite 80% of the work being detailed analysis of data on spreadsheets, at which I absolutely excel (love puns!)

Is it worth getting a diagnosis at my time of life? Are there any upsides? I wonder if I would not have been made redundant if my diagnosis was known.
Would you / do you tell your potential employer during interview? Or after you are hired? Or don't you tell your employer?

I would say probably worth pursuing a diagnosis especially if you think you been discriminated against and that will maybe help with job centre etc as well

i ALWAYS disclose but that is cos mine is obvious. Even complete strangers sometimes ask if I am autistic. If I did not tell them before I go interview most people would realise something is “wrong” cos I can get very stuck with my words and there would be no explanation?

i did consider not disclosing especially when I was going for jobs internally at work and not getting anywhere but the staff disability support group advised me it was always best to disclose

Thank you. I think I will look into getting a diagnosis.

Can an employer choose to keep another staff member as they are better at “social skills “. I’m not sure that’s legal.

Diagnosis now, may take some time.

I disclose my asd at interview as it’s a part of who I am. I always get “really! You’d never think it!”

This makes me realise that my coping/masking talent is finely honed. Which saddens me.

Yes, the whole restructure was probably barely legal, or not legal, but I am not fighting as I will get a nice redundancy package.

I think I probably also mask really well, when I am trying, but as I get older I can't be bothered with masking all the time, so probably come across as grumpy and eccentric to those who don't know about autism.
