Although use of the word ‘autism’ as a recognised diagnosis didn’t come until 1943 (when it was given to a man called Donald Triplett), the term autistic actually dates much further back; being used throughout the early 20th century to describe people with schizophrenic tendencies.

All Level Crossings in the UK are risk-assessed using a model called the 'all level crossing risk model' (ALCRM). There are approximately 6000 in the UK and around 17 different types of crossing. Network Rail are trying gradually to replace them all due to safety concerns.

I find them compelling. The Rail Accident Investigation Bureau has conducted several class investigations into level crossing safety, which are very interesting reading - but in a nutshell, they are inherently dangerous so you are right to be wary of them.
