Help with managing this well...

I have neurodiversity (ADHD) and I'm also a manager.

I have a team member, let's call him Dave, who I suspect might be autistic. His son has been diagnosed with autism and some of the ways he struggles with his current role lead me to believe he is too although obviously I'm not a psychologist and it would be inappropriate for me to suggest it to him.

So, in that sense my thoughts are irrelevant but might give some context.

In his previous role he did well - it was task oriented, with very clear direction and not very much ambiguity.

He got a promotion six months ago which comes with more responsibility - there's a lot more ambiguity, it's much less directive, it often involves looking at something you've worked with for years in a completely new perspective.

I absolutely realise not everyone with ND would struggle with these things. We're all different and we all struggle with different things (and are better than average at others).

However, his role is going to be really stressful for him if he continues to struggle with these core aspects of it.

Is there a way (whether he has a ND or not) I can help him work on being more comfortable with ambiguity, implied statements (so needing to understand what a senior stakeholder has implied rather than explicitly said), working with only high level and fairly vague direction?

I'm conscious that this is a case of a possible ND person having to work out how to work in an NT world but I can't change the world for him Sad

It would be easier to manage if he had a diagnosis as then we could have an open conversation about it and go down the reasonable adjustments route.

However since he doesn't as he is either not ND / is in denial or doesn't want to talk about it (all fair enough) that isn't an option.

Hopeful bump
