Does anyone go to therapy and how did you find a therapist that has experience with adult neurodiverse patients?

I have combined type ADHD (and probable ASD) and I'd like to find a therapist that specifically says that they work with neurodiverse adults. Someone who understands that I might have a different way of thinking about things will be non-judgemental.

I'm in Scotland if anyone can recommend.

This may be useful neurodivergenttherapists.com/directory/

I used the above directory, and am very happy with my ND therapist. Night and day from previous attempts with a few different NT therapists that really did more harm than good.

Thank you both, that's a big help. I'm going to email some of the therapists on that list this afternoon :)

Therapy is so important for me. It has helped me in so many ways around setting healthier boundaries / liking myself more / being harder to gaslight. It has helped me begin unpicking some truly horrible childhood messages I had absorbed like a sponge. Longer term I want to move towards more productivity focus but I think I needed time to lick my wounds and find self acceptance after an ADHD diagnosis in my forties.

For neurodivergent people I think vibing with your therapist is so crucial, moreso than even for NTs. Trust your gut and see who you feel safe with.

Thanks for your reply @SquirrelSoShiny It's great to hear a positive experience and that you found a therapist that helped you so much, a good vibe is exactly what I'm looking for! It would be nice to find a counsellor who understands that an ADHD/ASD brain processes things differently.

Now that I know I'm neurodiverse it makes sense why I found counselling so difficult/pointless pre-diagnosis, I find it very hard to open up and usually end up focussing on a petty annoyance rather than the actual messy stuff that I keep locked away. I must have spent 3 hours moaning about my SIL at my last attempt before I just gave up, no wonder the counsellor looked bored.

Everyone I've contacted so far is full, but I'm on a couple of waiting lists so I hope it won't be too long.
