ADHD… suddenly everything makes sense!

my dd (age 8) is becoming increasing obviously neurodiverse. Diagnosed with dyslexia recently, but also has struggles in other areas which have lead me to read up on ADD/ADHD. This has lead me to read up on the presentation of this condition in girls/woman.
It describes so much of me. It’s hit me like a brick. Thinking back to how I managed as a child/teen. The way I function as an adult.
I always just assumed I was a disorganised, lazy, underachieving introvert!
I think I might need to talk to my Dh, but I worry he will dismiss my ‘armchair diagnosis’. Not sure how to go about it…
Will be talking to school about Dd.

Don’t think I want to go down official diagnosis route for myself; i think I’ve unconsciously become good at managing areas I struggle in. I work and do most household stuff (Dh works very long hours). Guess I need to get my head round it a bit?!

How are you feeling about it?
it was shocking to me at first but over time I’ve found a lot of my shame and anxiety has lifted as I’ve stopped seeing myself as crap NT.

I highly recommend listening to podcasts as you get your head around this. There are so many inspirational women with adhd.

Welcome to the club ,,🥂

Personally I found my armchair diagnosis life affirming. It answered so many questions, I wasn’t just a “horrid” person. I’ve spent my life dealing with depression, just like that it’s gone!
Embrace it, yes you’ll get lots of eye rolls from people if you don’t go down the formal diagnosis route but you don’t need to tell them. You can now put loads of strategies in place to help yourself.
a formal diagnosis isn’t something to just say no to tho, medication can do amazing things for you.

Thanks lovely people :) I’m actually feeling quite good about it - that feeling like a crap NT person is definitely being replaced with feeling like a ‘not doing too bad’ ND person 😂. Any podcast recommendations?!
Im noticing more and more strategies I’ve already got in place, and beginning to recognise the ones that aren’t great. I’ve definitely realised I massively avoid conversations I know I won’t be able to follow (finances, travel details, my Dh’s job 😂). A first step for me is going to try to be less self conscious of taking notes during conversations I need to either remember (e.g. organisational stuff) or understand (e.g. finances).
Also, beginning to think that my ability to nip into the kitchen for a brew and eat a million calories without noticing may be connected!
I am definitely not discounting medication - just need to get my head round it first!

I love ADDitude podcasts for the serious stuff, and I’m currently enjoying Women & ADHD with Katy Weber.

I suspect quite a few of my non-adhd podcasters probably have adhd, although that may be because I listen to them at x2 speed so they all sound hyper.

I will give those podcasts a go - thanks :)
