What noises just tip you over the edge?

A question for other autistic people

Which noises are guaranteed to send you into sensory hell?

I'm lay in bed at the moment and can hear the incessant hum of a lawnmower and my heart is just racing and I'm clenching my teeth so hard. It's one of the worst noises for me.

I also can't handle military planes and power tools.

I live right next to a set of traffic lights. Without a doubt, the worst sound in the world is a motorbike or moped waiting at the lights revving, as I try and tolerate the irritating unpredictability of the revs in the sure and certain knowledge that at an unspecified but increasingly imminent point, there'll be the deafening scream/roar of it pulling away. From the infuriating 50cc scooter to the throaty cacophony of the big powerful motorcycle, every one of them causes me intense distress. When I see people online saying "loud pipes save lives" I just want to stab them in the ears with a rusty exhaust pipe.

gingercatowner · 13/06/2022 21:56

I agree with motorbikes, they are total sensory hell for me. I also can't stand the sound of whistling, it irritates me so much

ofwarren · 13/06/2022 22:00

I agree with you on motorbikes.
A guy who lives at the back of us revs his engine for ages in his garden every weekend. I don't know why. The noise is so distressing isn't it.

It is, ofwarren. I can't afford double glazing and I'm in one of those barely-set-back terraces, so the damn things are practically in my living room with me 😑

ItDoesMyHeadIn · 13/06/2022 22:10

Eating - particularly apples or crisps
WHISPERING
Fucking wrapper rustlers
When a door gently bangs against the frame due to wind
Dogs barking
Screaming kids
Draw slammers
Noisy people
People 😄

Floorandflooringme · 13/06/2022 22:11

Velcro, lots of people talking and sudden loud noises.

Mb76 · 13/06/2022 22:21

Motorbikes
leaf blowers
planes landing (we live under Heathrow flight path 🤦🏻‍♀️)
hand driers in public toilets
people walking behind me with either high heels clicking or Ugg type boots scraping the ground

ofwarren · 13/06/2022 22:22

I also get a strange emotional response to sirens from police, ambulance or fire engines if they go past me too closely.
I don't put my hands over my ears but I feel like I'm going to cry. The sound is so overwhelming I think.

Motorbikes or noisy engines
kids
ongoing dog barking
leaf blowers

ofwarren · 13/06/2022 22:33

Agree with ongoing dog barking
That can be torture

Oh and coffee machines
on the rare occasion I meet someone in a coffee shop, those machines drive me nuts. It's usually only when they insist on that rather than a pub.

DottyLittleRainbow · 13/06/2022 23:13

People eating
Rustling crisp packets
Clapping
Whistling
Hand dryers
Pneumatic drilling
Motorbikes

Chalk on a chalkboard - or worse, the sound of the chalk duster for cleaning the blackboards like at school

Anything that’s the sound of fabric dragging on itself particularly felt or wool - it’s like the sound of the clash of texture. This is the worst for me even though it’s barely a sound at all

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 13/06/2022 23:27

I like to whistle from time to time Blush

Jeanieology · 13/06/2022 23:32

Anyone humming drives me insane

Shellsbelles · 13/06/2022 23:32

Oh my goodness, all of these. Well almost, I'm OK with whistling and clapping.

But doors banging (even gently) in the wind, noisy eaters (ok, any noise when eating, doesn't have to be particularly noisy), microwave beeping, traffic, people scrolling in the background without 🎧, tumble dryer, notifications, coffee machines/milk steamers, loud music...

Shellsbelles · 13/06/2022 23:33

It all stresses me out and leaves me on edge

lolly07766 · 13/06/2022 23:34

I wish I knew, I'd say a baby crying is most difficult for my son

Lovinglife45 · 14/06/2022 07:35

Motorbikes - I freeze
Cars revving engine
Lots of people speaking
My kids shreaking

Caminante · 14/06/2022 07:45

An idling car engine outside my house. I can feel it in my whole body.

The noise I hate the most in the coffee shop is the banging. This happens most in chains like Costa. They bang the metal coffee scoop thing.

AutieAdult · 14/06/2022 07:53

No special noise but I have good hearing so everything seems loud.

GazeboLantern · 14/06/2022 08:06

Repetitive noises, especially ticking clocks.

Doors knocking or squeaking in a draft.

Snoring. It is the worst combination of repetitive with unpredictable surprises.

I don't mind the sound of Velcro, as long as it is one-off. People readjusting and readjusting and readjusting Velcro - argh!

Unnecessarily loud noises. I'm accommodated to the level of noise on a road, and then suddenly a bloody monster roars up and my body locks into fright/flight/fight/freeze mode. Only it's just a stupid motorbike or souped up penis-envy car or someone who's filled their car boot with speakers (are they called 'sub-woofers'?).

GazeboLantern · 14/06/2022 08:11

Ds's stim! It's a cross between 'um' and a little high-pitched grunt. I cannot possibly stop him because doing it usually means that he is very focused and very happy with what he is focusing on.

Rreaq · 14/06/2022 09:02

Children screaming or crying is the worst for me.
Shopping trolleys and the clatter they make
More than one person talking at a time, like over each other.
Any sudden noise.
Motorbikes and cars revving
Shouting or screaming
Radios, particularly awful in shops when it's all tinny and all the other noise combined with it.
Anything high pitch

Pretty much hate everything noise wise but those are the worst 😂 part of the reason I never really leave the house much, I have ear plugs but I find them annoying to wear.

bobbythevet · 14/06/2022 09:15

The laundry spin cycle is the one that kills me. Can't speak or do anything till it's done.
