Do you like weighted things?

I'm lay in bed and I've got a heavy duvet and 3 cats lay on me and it's lovely. It got me thinking that even before I was diagnosed (I was in my 30s) I used to love the weight of things on me and obviously never knew why.

As a child I used to love it when my mum put all the laundry on my bed. I get her to leave it on there so I could sleep under it.

I used to get under the cushion on the sofa and get my brother to sit on it.

I LOVED wearing the heavy vest thing when my son had xrays.

I now have a weighted blanket. I don't use it every night, mainly if I'm ill or anxious and my heart rate lowers so quickly. I love it!

Do any of you use weighted things or remember using other things for their weight as a child?

I'm NT but love heavy duvets and blankets especially tucked tight on the bed
I also get my partner to cuddle me Blush just as a comfort thing I'm "lie on me please"

Yes I do, but I'm prone to overheating so can't cope with too many blankets. I try to get the cats to lie on my back, but they don't always want to do it and I used to get ds2 to walk up and down my back when he was a toddler because it felt great 😄 I often imagine that I'd like a rock to be placed on my back when I'm lying down. It seems a bit weird though so I've never done that.

Yes!!! When I was a child I would sleep with many blankets on top of me.

Now I like lying on my stomach and getting DH to lie on top of me. He thinks it is very strange 😄

Love my weighted blanket, and also love being laid upon. I use a backpack as a handbag just for the sensation of weight on me.

No, I'm not really into it. I bought a weighted blanket to try on the recommendation of my therapist but it makes my (shitty, hypermobile) joints ache, as well as making me feel trapped. I did used to like having my partner lie on me sometimes, which is why the therapist suggested it, but it turns out it's only any good if the weighted thing is sentient and able to follow instructions.

What's the best way to try a weighted blanket without actually buying one (in case I don't like it)?

I am awaiting assessment, so no dx at present, but yes. I've always needed something over me to sleep even if just a sheet in the Summer. I always watch TV with a single duvet over me, anything else just feels wrong. However I can't stand anything that makes me feel trapped. I love DCat and appreciate the love and snuggles, but the moment she properly hunkers down on my lap/legs/chest is the moment I get an overwhelming urge to wriggle around and jump up. Thankfully we're mostly on the same page with this, and she'll usually snuggle up tightly next to me instead. I also cannot bear to be hugged (or touched at all) whilst I'm trying to sleep. I'm very much "thank you for the lovely goodnight kiss and cuddle, now sod off back to your side of the bed so I can contort myself into funny shapes in peace" Grin So, yes to weighted as long as it doesn't pin me down. Clothes elicit the same desperation to get it off me: I can't stand anything tight or restrictive.

Ooh, I'm not sure. Mine was only about £40 from amazon which is really quite cheap.
I can't think of anything else that feels like one so you could try that instead. All you could do I suppose, is lend one off someone.

I'm NT but a weighted blanket is wonderful for my anxiety.

Sweetpea1532 · 23/04/2022 23:01

@IStandWithMaya I bought a weighted blanket on Amazon and I didn't like it...I was able to return it as I'd made sure they offered free returns before buying it.

It really is for me too. If I'm having a panic attack, I get under it and listen to calming things on my headphones and it goes away very quickly.

I didn’t realise how much I love weight on me until my newly adopted chubby cat started using me as a piece of furniture. She would rest on my hip or bicep area and purr us to sleep. After that I bought a weighted blanket and love it.

I never realised this was ND thing 😯

I remember moving house and I got crushed between my v heavy mattress and the wall and it felt so nice I got my hb to let it happen several times. I also like to get him to lie down on top of me, both on my front and back. I told a group of friends about it once and they all looked at me like I'd grown an extra head.

I just generally like the feeling of being smooshed. Maybe I need to try a weighted blanket?!
