I think I'm autistic, in going to try to get assessed though NHS. But husband is a laddy lad and doesn't really know much about autism. He is open to learning and understanding though. Can you recommend a book, audio book or podcast for him to read/ listen to to help him understand me/autism/ neurodiversity?

Thanks

Have you watched the documentary with Paddy McGuiness and Christine McGuinness on BBC1 about their family. It may help as a bit of a broad introduction, particularly if you felt that Christine's traits are similar to yours at all? It had a bit of a mixed reception from the autistic community, and it's not perfect but could be a helpful conversation starter potentially?

I just ordered “drama queen” by Sarah Gibbs who was diagnosed with autism aged 30. It’s amazing. I’m on the waiting list for an assessment and this book describes perfectly how I’ve felt my whole life.

Just joining for recommendations. When I first broached the issue with my DH he said (and this is honestly verbatim!)

"But you're nothing like Rainman!"

I have since shown him some online tests and even got him to complete one himself (which showed him as majority NT) and talked through my strong ND results. I've also started highlighting the (almost daily) times he tells me something I'm doing is 'weird' (not unkindly). He is, I think, slowly starting to 'get it'.

He is 60, so like me, but even more so, grew up in an era where there was little to no awareness of neurodiverisity in the average working-class family.

^neurodiversity, not 'diverisity' 😫

get him to note down those times you are weird board. You will need them for assessment. he might need them for your assessment.

Have a look at the Girl with the curly hair project l, it's run by Alis Rowe who has autism. She does a lot to raise awareness through podcasts, webinars and books.

This book is brilliant and what actually confirmed for me what I suspected (that I am autistic, now diagnosed).

I recommend Odd Girl Out too.

My DH is reading both. He keeps exclaiming 'Oh!' at parts of Drama Queen and shaking his head, like 'lightbulb moment' Grin
