Taking a break from ADHD meds - yes or no?

I’ve heard some people say it’s a good idea to take breaks. I’ve ended up doing that (as I was sick one day I didn’t bother, that was 10 days ago and I’ve not taken it since) and I feel surprisingly fine. It’s almost like in the time I’ve been on it (Elvanse 40mg) I’d built up much better coping strategies and good habits etc, and that’s seeing me through? Compared to when I was on a break between meds (I tried Matoride XL for a while) and I was an absolute wreck. Also thanks to the difference meds made I now have a WFH job and I’ve started studying, so I have a bit more enforced routine in a way.

Also though I was struggling a bit more before the break - certainly still a vast improvement compared to pre-diagnosis, but more overwhelm etc. So maybe a break was needed (similar to DD1 having a melatonin break when it was no longer helping her sleep).

This isn’t something I can discuss with my psychiatrist (could fill a thread on the lack of adhd knowledge, but I’m not due for review yet so I’m not actually able to anyway) so thought I’d ask here!

Sorry, I don't have any answers but perhaps this will give it a bump

How do you find it, being on meds? I'm dithering.

I took a 2 week break recently from Elvanse, I do feel myself again but with all the ADHD bells and whistles back of course. Just proves that it does work.

I take a break every now and again. Then my life descends into chaos and I have to go back on the medication again. Still dealing with the fallout from losing my keys Sad.

That being said, I find the medication works at full strength again after a bit off a break as my tolerance is much lower.

the extra dopamine and neurotransmitting help you get from the meds builds up, and won't just vanish when you stop - equally it won't last forever either so I wouldn't stay off them permanently if you want to keep things how they have been
