Anyone have a really high pain threshold?

And have you considered why?

I have had around 4 or 5 fillings in my life. Rejected analgesics. Weirdly, it may have been a subconscious knowledge that local anaesthetic didn't work on me (found out via other minor ops, and subsequent diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome)

I gave birth to my daughter which was very quick and very painful. None of the pushing that you see on TV births. Literally couldn't speak. No screaming at my partner. I just had to focus and breathe. Also, I was adamant I'd have a water birth and I did. I appreciate this may have been partly due to luck. But I needed that space between me and medical professionals. Didn't want to be touched, so it gave me control.

Are we used to pain in the sense that we are used to masking? It's a possibility surely? We experience things every day that others may not have to deal with. We often deal with noise presenting as an almost physical pain. Along with other sensory issues.

And lastly, perhaps we experience other, physical conditions that we have dealt with for so long before seeking help. In my own case, I've had nerve pain for around two decades. Didn't cross my mind to look into it because I'm just so used to battling and masking so many things.

Interesting thought, Anaesthetics don't work on me well. My births also fairly quick too much so for any anaesthesia, hated entonox anyway as doesn't work on me - but BP went through the roof, nearly passed out at pushing.

Then, besides dentistry - I really do need more pain relief Mr B, and still more than that!

I had a colonoscopy year before last- never again, I felt every bit of it, I remember every bit - awful. I told them the anaesthesia wasn't working they told me to be quiet and that I was imagining it; it was as if the alien was working it's way around my bowels. I really should have written to PALS after that.

And lastly, perhaps we experience other, physical conditions that we have dealt with for so long before seeking help. In my own case, I've had nerve pain for around two decades. Didn't cross my mind to look into it because I'm just so used to battling and masking so many things.

I concur, I was finally diagnosed with carpal tunnel and TNS far too late, I done so much damage over the years to do anything about it.

I’m a moany baby too but saying that I often notice lumps and bruises or burns at bedtime with a vague recollection of an impact but no clear memory. I wish I could consciously control it though. (Adhd). I always need extra anaesthetic. So does my df.

Yeah, i think it's poor interoception on my part though.

AfterSchoolWorry · 25/02/2022 18:21

Oh yeah, anaesthetic wears off me very quickly.

I gave birth without pain relief, I felt the contractions and the actual birth but it wasn't painful. The cannula they put in the back of my hand 'just in case' that I kept knocking on things was the most painful part. I was in no pain after a domestic assault with significant bruising, an undisplaced fracture and head wound requiring stitches. The stitches hurt despite the local anaesthetic. Taking them out myself didn't.

Yes and No.

Yes, I have a high pain threshold when it comes to burns and contractions.

No, I have a teeny tiny threshold when it comes to paper cuts :( Or their evil siblings: Plastic cuts :( :( :(
I still have a plastic cut scar from Christmas when a box of marzipan from M&S cut me deep :( M&S gave me a £15 gift voucher. I should have held out for more.

duvetdayforeveryone · 25/02/2022 20:55

Oh, I forgot I have no pain threshold when it comes to being wet. Rain and showers really hurt :(

AmbushedByCake · 26/02/2022 20:07

I am fairly certain I have adhd.

The anaesthetic wore off when I was having my broken leg pinned. The leg was broken in several places and the ankle bone dislocated; admitting nurse said it probably wasn't broken, based on how I presented in a&e. So yes, I do have a high pain threshold for real pain but am an absolute baby for minor aches.

I have to pay privately for sedation for dental procedures as local doesn’t bloody work on me and I am sure as shit not sitting through that.

Birth? Done it three times. Not even a sniff of gas and air let alone anything harder, didn’t even know I was in labour all three times until my waters broke, with baby being born 1 hour later for #1, 30 mins later for #2 and 10 minutes for #3 - the staff were arguing with me that I couldn’t possibly be in labour with #3 because I was speaking through contractions and calm - it was in RED on my notes from my Consultant that I have fast labours and don’t present in a typical way. I ended up giving birth in the fucking hallway, stood up, and almost dropped DD Angry
