Do you repeat stories you have already told people?

Disclaimer
This is the neurodiverse mumsnetters board so I'm directing my question to ND people.

I'm quite often told by my dh that I've already told him certain stories. For example, we will be talking about something we did as children and I will mention some anecdote about what I did and he will say "I know, you've already told me this story".

I also know that I've already told him the story but I want to tell him again and get annoyed when he stops me to say he's already heard it.

My mum who I think is also autistic does the same. Whenever a certain food is mentioned, she starts telling us how she doesn't like that food but in certain circumstances she will eat it. I must have heard the story 100 times.

Do you do this?

I’m autistic and no this. Sometimes I don’t realise as my memory is bad so I don’t know if I’ve told that particular person the story. Maybe it’s because I’m needing to concentrate on the social cues to work out when I can start peaking/person is bored/interested. I’m also figuring out whether this is appropriate story to the context of the conversation, can be easy to go too much detail so the listener will be bored or not understand.

Hi, we just wanted to highlight the OP's disclaimer at the top of this thread in case anyone missed it first time round-

I do. I have conversations that I know work and so I use them again and again. I try to not do it to the same people often but I'm sure I do.

I feel a bit weird about the way this board is going. Nothing anyone NT has posted has been offensive - is it because you’ve asked them not to post or that generally NT people aren’t welcome to post on any of the board?

On a few posts I asked for ND input specifically. I'm not bothered on most but on this one I wanted to see how prevalent it was for ND people.

Thank you ofwarren I get that ; sometimes you just need someone to accept you are a bit different. I repeat myself a lot and I think it’s for certainty - I want to make sure someone has understood; also with stories I’m really awkward and don’t have many anecdotes that are just fun etc so I run out! I read somewhere that’s how masking works up to a point - you can tell one joke to ten people and do it really well but when you meet them again you can’t repeat it because that’s your learned intro.

IncompleteSenten · 20/02/2022 20:02

I think when you post on the ND mumsnetters section and in your OP you specify that you are looking for the experiences of other ND women it's no more appropriate for an NT person to respond with their experience of what they feel is the same thing than it would be if a black person posted on black mners section asking for the experiences of other black mners and someone posted I'm white and lots of white people I know ...

It's ok to ask for input from a specific group and I think that should be respected when asked for.

PangoPurrl · 20/02/2022 21:14

Yes, definitely! I'll become vaguely aware I'm doing it and make a joke out of it, something like "oh god, I'm doing that thing where I think I've told this to all 5 people that I know, but I've just told you 5 times haven't I?!" But now I think I'm also saying that lots too, and the few people I'm good friends with are quite possibly sick of it but too lovely to say anything. Oh dear!

ENoeuf · 20/02/2022 22:48

I do find thought that I am often nodding along and making appropriate noises to the same story from someone I assume to be ND. Which is just the whole we have to accommodate them but there’s no reciprocation thing.

BlackeyedSusan · 21/02/2022 00:28

I notice that some nt people do this. (assuming they are NT) I find it annoying. I try not to do the same. but I probably do. I have no idea. I do repeat the same story to lots of different people. if I repeat stuff to ex, it does not matter as he doies not remember. I think iI have said stuff to sil more than once. I want to repeat stories to people who it is not appropriate to repeat stories too. (eg professionals)

sorry to waffle, not very helpful. (communication disability out on show, soz)

BlackeyedSusan · 21/02/2022 00:33

sorry the NT I find annoying is not necessarily because of the repeats, but the content this particular person shares. and they narked me beauce they had a cough and didn't fucking test as they were "not bothering with all that" and went out and then found they were positive for covid and then bloody worried about having infected people... so maybe I am holding a grudge. I do hold a grudge...

I good story I would like to hear again.

BlackeyedSusan · 21/02/2022 00:34

maybe I am just menopausal and grumpy... and lost patience.

ENoeuf · 21/02/2022 01:21

^^ above I meant assume to be NT not ND
