Why is everyone so obsessed with cats?

Just musing on this, as I’ve read a lot of posts on here saying about cats.

I’m not an animal fan, really, but if forced to choose I’d go for dogs.

But it is so, so common for the people I know with ASD to be obsessed with cats. And that’s coming through on here too.

I just find them scary because they’re so unpredictable and apparently you can’t train them to stay away from things, which I would hate.

Am I doing autism wrong (again!)? What is it about cats that fascinates rather than scares people?

@ofwarren

One just got on my knee and lay down on my chest, squinted her eyes at me and touched me slowly on the face with her paw 🐾 Melts my heart
That's so adorable. I love cats. We can't have any because DD is very allergic to them.

I used to like cats but not be obsessed! Then I adopted this massive ginger bugger… also FIV+ because I couldn’t deal with the anxiety of him going out.

I am AMAZED at my reaction to him. With humans I never really understand how they feel about me but I can tell Flynn loves me, I can actually understand his non verbal communication, which I can’t do in humans! He has some behavioural issues due to his life before we adopted him and I can work out when he is over stimulated and needs some down time far far quicker than my neurotypical partner.

I also find his presence incredibly relaxing and he is very cuddly which makes me very happy from a sensory perspective.

So I wasn’t obsessed with cats… until I got one! Now he is 100% my special interest!

He is gorgeous! I really love ginger cats. One of the nicest cat colours.

I'm autistic. I don't like cats or dogs.
