Do you do "t rex arms"?

autisticemmalyn.com/autistic-arms/

I used to do this a lot more as a child. One of my memories is of being criticised for the way I held my bag so I forced myself not to do it and I now wrap my hands around each other at waist height instead.

I'm trying hard to not mask at all these days and I've noticed that I still t rex with my dominant arm/hand when I'm walking around looking for something. Also, if I do force my hands to my waist, I'm more likely to rock or sway from side to side.

DD does T Rex arms. I used to as a kid, but more tucking in at the waist with palms facing out. It actually probably looks really uncomfortable to other people, but it's so natural to me.

So like this

Do you do "t rex arms"?

That's sort of what I do but I cross and clasp my hands. They are backwards like yours.

It's amazing what our bodies feel comfortable with. Having given it a little more thought, I've realised I sleep with backwards T Rex style arms / hands.

Me too, but only on the arm I'm lying on. It's similar to the "wedging" thing we were talking about the other day I think.
I wake up with a dead hand quire often.

I was lucky in that, when I was getting my diagnosis ten years ago, my family were open to being involved with the process.

When my mother mentioned this during a family consultation (we used to call them 'bunny arms' in our house), the psychiatrist I was working with went 'yep, there we go'. Up until that point, I hadn't even realised it was a thing.

I do it far less as an adult (a combination of learned behaviours and masking), but it does emerge every now and again, especially if I'm a bit stressed / worried or excited (I 'flap' too).

I rock. As though I have a baby on my hip. Sleep with t-Rex arms though

ofwarren · 15/02/2022 15:39

Bunny arms is MUCH nicer than t rex arms!
I'm changing what I call it now Grin

Bunny arms is cute!

AffIt · 15/02/2022 16:21

You are all very welcome to bunny arms! Grin

I like both bunnies and dinosaurs, so I also gratefully accept the (new to me) 'T-Rex arms'.

I stand on the outsides of my feet, is that a thing? I don't have any foot or leg problems I don't pronate and it happens less when I have shoes on but barefoot it's my natural position and most comfortable to stand on the outsides

Yes! I stand on the outsides of my feet too. I do have joint issues, but I wonder if that's actually a red herring. I'm seeing my orthotics specialist next week so I'll ask them. They already know I do this, but I'd love to have their take on it.
Mummiepig · 15/02/2022 18:14

I tried googling it and a few people say it's a thing, I don't think it's a physical problem for me because I walk and run loads and my shoes wear down evenly and I don't have any problems or pain, it just feels so comfy!

Mummiepig · 15/02/2022 18:19

I don't think I do the arms thing but I've never payed much attention to my arms, I'll try and monitor it! My husband always says stop standing like that!

EssexLioness · 15/02/2022 18:24

I do the arms thing too! Didn’t know it was an autism thing. Always embarrassed me cos I know I look weird but seem to default to this position automatically without realising. Good to know this is a thing and not just me

helpfulperson · 15/02/2022 18:40

I wonder if it's not so much that trex arms etc is an autism thing rather autistic people are less likely to be aware most people don't stand like that. Although why standing like that should be a problem I'm not sure.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 15/02/2022 19:24

@NorthSouthcatlady

Bunny arms is cute!
We call them kitty paws here.
ofwarren · 15/02/2022 19:26

Kitty paws!!
Now I'm spoilt for choice!

Given the input, should we call it 'bunny rex paws'? Grin
