What kind of food do you like to eat?

I'm a serious sensory seeker where food is concerned so if I don't attempt to curb what I eat, I hugely over eat. I'm not picky at all and like almost all food. The only positive of that is when I'm on a diet, I don't really feel restricted.

My severely autistic older brother has eaten the same meal for at least 30 years. He has crisps for his breakfast, something like toast or cheese and crackers for lunch and for dinner he has sausage, egg and peas. Every day. He will eat the odd yogurt.
He would literally refuse to eat anything else.

I will eat most things, but if I have a bad experience with something it will put me off eating it for months if not years - like if I bite into an apple and it's bad, I can't face eating apples for ages afterwards.

I'm also an 'angry' eater if that makes any sense - if I feel angry I have the urge to suppress the 'heat' of the anger by eating - cramming food into myself - usually something like slices of white bread.

I do overeat if I give myself free reign but I also have it in me to diet obsessively - in my adult life I have been both obese and underweight and everywhere between more than once.

I am much better since I cut out processed foods and I'm currently maintaining a healthy weight based on not restricting food, but making sure what I am eating is right for me.

As a child I was emetophobic for several years and limited what I ate because I was afraid of being sick. Thankfully I managed to overcome that - not sure how, it just 'clicked' one day that being sick wouldn't really do me any harm, and from that point I became quite an adventurous eater.

Did someone mention food!? 😋

I eat anything that doesn’t create washing up. I don’t like washing up, I find it incredibly unpleasant. Before I met my husband I lived on sandwiches and tinned soup because there was only one plate to wash. Now I have to cook a proper meal every night because he wants one and I struggle to cope with the dishes. He used to shout at me all the time because the dirty dishes would pile up until they went mouldy. So he bought a dishwasher and I’m happy to put stuff in and take it out and put it away. But the stuff that can’t go in the dishwasher (pans and trays etc) still pile up and then he shouts at me. Then I retaliate by refusing to cook anything that requires a dish that can’t go in the dishwasher. He apologises and says he will wash the dishes. That lasts for maybe a week and then he shouts at me again.

I totally feel this.
Washing is the worst job in the house and every plate, cup, knife and fork seem to get used up.
It's a never ending task.

ofwarren I just don’t like touching the hot water. I’m perfectly happy to take a bath or shower because my whole body is in the water, but I don’t like having my hands in hot water when the rest of me is cold and dry. Also I’m clumsy and my clothes end up soaking wet and the water goes on the floor. I don’t like having wet clothes and I don’t like having to get changed.

Left to my own devices I'll just eat cornflakes. I hate cooking and all meal prep.

duvetdayforeveryone · 13/02/2022 19:31

Sugar, sugar, and more sugar Grin

Gutenpranken · 13/02/2022 19:32

Well, as a kid I ate the same breakfast (cornflakes without milk) every day for years, and when I came in from school I'd have a peanut butter and honey sandwich on white sliced bread, every day, again for years. Apart from that, my eating was limited to quite simple, plain foods - I liked meat, fish, potatoes and certain green vegetables. No sauces or gravy. No butter, jam or yoghurt. I disliked cold or sloppy foods - still do.

I got quite a bit better as an adult and tried lots of new foods, but I'm still limited compared to most people. It's a texture thing. I find the thought of eating most fruits revolting - anything squishy or with seeds is out. On the other hand, I tend to like foods that are widely disliked, like olives, anchovies, tinned fish, sauerkraut, blue cheese. I like oily textures, salt and crunchy or fluffy textures. Potatoes are a case in point - I loathe waxy ones but adore fluffy/dry ones.

I still gravitate to meat (ideally roasted), potatoes and veg. I will eat a curry or bolognese, but I need to know exactly what's in it, so normally only have these homemade, and they'd never be my choice. Only have them because my other family members would get so bored with what I like Smile

Can really relate to this too. As a very small child I (and siblings) were expected to take turns washing up. I begged my mum for Marigolds and have always used them ever since for any kind of cleaning that involves wet cloths. For me it was partly the wetness and partly the thought of bits of food lurking in the water.

I've got a dishwasher now and I absolutely love it. LOVE IT.

I like to eat and I like to cook - I'm not fussy, and I'll eat almost anything (although I've been vegetarian for about eight years, so obvious limits aside!).

Favourite foods are generally East Asian (I lived in Korea and Japan for a while).

However, I'm not very motivated by food, if that makes sense - I generally only eat once or twice a day, and if my OH is away for work, sometimes I just don't bother, or will have a 'fridge dinner' (whatever can be eaten standing up at the fridge with no utensils).

There are some physical sensations I don't really respond to or can easily ignore, such as hunger cues. I also have, according to some HCPs, unusually high pain tolerance levels.

Mabelface · 14/02/2022 10:03

I'm a strict vegetarian. I don't eat mushrooms, nuts or sweetcorn as I can't bear the texture of them. I can eat a wide variety of food, but I don't always recognise that I'm hungry so can forget to eat. My go to is a quorn deli ham sandwich with butter on white bread if I'm home, or egg mayonnaise when I'm working.

Nortd · 14/02/2022 14:39

I go through phases of being so adventurous (in my mind anyway!), loving cooking and trying lots of different things, cooking new cuisines. Loving the kitchen type thing. And then other phases where I will basically exist off potato and junk food for a while, I've been in the potato phrase for several weeks (months I think tbh) I feel like crap but normal food feels... Scary doesn't feel quite the right word but similar, the kitchen makes me feel nervous when I'm feeling like this.

I can't do portion control well either.

BlackeyedSusan · 15/02/2022 07:51

I'm 50%Pringle. Trying to shift some of that weight.
