Do you like comedy?

There is a myth that autistic people don't understand jokes or sarcasm when I think that we do, but to different extents.
Personally I struggle most with sarcasm, especially when it's written, like on twitter for example.
I get most jokes, it doesn't mean I think it's funny though.
I really don't enjoy comedy, the only type I don't mind is the ones that laugh at things that happen in real life.
I can't stand sitcoms, I've never laughed at one once. I "get" the joke but it's just not funny.

I don’t like sitcoms either. I like observational comedy though. Like Michael McKintyre.
I also like ‘fails’ like You’ve been framed.

Is that what it's called, observational comedy? That's the only type that can actually make me laugh.

Yep that’s right @ofwarren - laughing at ridiculous things that happen in real life.

I think in particular I find MM really funny because he always seems cheerful if you know what I mean. I’m prone to glumness so I feel better after I have watched him.

I like comedy in general, particularly absurdist comedy such as Monty Python, the Mighty Boosh and early Reeves and Mortimer. I also like storytellers such as Billy Connolly.

I like satire too, such as the News Quiz on BBCR4, or anything by Mark Steel.

However, comedy aimed at 'laughing at' rather than 'laughing with' people makes me die a thousand deaths inside, so comedians such as Lee Evans, physical 'pratfall'-style comedy or anything where unknowing people are targeted, such as prank calls or similar.

I have never understood why people find clowns funny.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 13/02/2022 12:27

I like stuff like Peep Show and Mitchell and Webb.

Interesting. My DD has asd, and does not get comedy/jokes AT.ALL.
My DS has ADHD, and loves comedy, puns, sarcasm, the lot.
My mum and my sister have Asperger's diagnoses and love comedy, both have great senses of humour, and use sarcasm regularly.
But poor DD. She will literally sit there when everyone is talking and laughing and say "but why is that funny?" and frequently cannot find something funny even when explained.

Mundra · 13/02/2022 12:36

And @AffIt - I think many people, Nd and not, do not find clowns amusing at all.

Bless her
How old is she?
I know of other autistic people who don't get it too. It's definitely a sliding scale.

100%! Why they're still a thing when so many people feel indifferent to them at best and positively loathe / are terrified of them at worst is one of life's big mysteries. Grin

I like sketch comedy such as Mitchell and Webb too.

On the topic of sketch comedy / Mitchell and Webb, I absolutely ADORE John Finnemore's work (Souvenir Programme, Cabin Pressure etc) - anybody else a fan?

AppleButter · 13/02/2022 14:49

I very very very rarely like comedy - I DO get the jokes, I just don't find them funny. Hate slapstick and loud clown behaviour, which is meant to be funny but I find it revolting.

watchtheglitterdustswirl · 13/02/2022 14:50

I love lots of stand up! I go to a few shows every year, covid permitting.

I sometimes am a bit slow on the uptake when I'm not expecting a joke in normal life. I need a bit of processing time and I have to stop DH jumping in to explain it to me like I'm an idiot because explaining a joke means it's almost never funny.

But if I'm expecting it, like watching a comedy or seeing a show then yes I love it.

But then I also appreciate and often use sarcasm. Another thing autistic people are not 'supposed to' be able to do. I'm a sarcastic arse sometimes!

Mundra · 13/02/2022 23:37

She's 15, so she does recognise when we use sarcasm, but doesn't appreciate our wit Wink

Namechangeagain84 · 14/02/2022 19:17

I love comedy, but only certain things that I will watch over: Green Wing, The Office, Afterlife, Extras, Michael McIntyre makes me laugh a lot.l, 8 Out of 10 Cats. I thought Sean Lock was great!
I can't stand slapstick comedy. And some things classed as a comedy (Rita Sue and Bob Too) for example, I just find tragic.

Namechangeagain84 · 14/02/2022 19:19

@watchtheglitterdustswirl I hear you about jokes not being funny when explained! I don't get stand up jokes quite a lot, but I do enjoy some stand up.

ofwarren · 14/02/2022 19:32

I think with Michael Mcintyre, I find him funny because he takes the piss out of things that I don't understand about NT people. Things like the following:

"So hello! I'm good at hello, I'm not very good with goodbye, especially on the phone. I don't know what's happened, every time I say goodbye I sound like a fucking idiot. What is it? You sound like a child, you feel it coming when you're on the phone. It can be a very serious conversation "of course I'll be at the funeral, I loved your father deeply, I'll say a few words. [high pitched] Byeeeeee!" Why am I doing that?"

I find myself thinking, "yes! Why DO they do that?" Grin

DS gets sarcasm and can use it. Was well chuffed. DD on the other hand...

I like Victoria Wood and Jasper Carrot.

And last of the summer wine as it is a bit slapstick.

Hate people's feelings getting hurt.

Me too, i don't like comedy at people expense. Makes me cringe.
