Do you prefer contentment over happiness or excitement?

Does anyone else feel the same?

I really don't like extremes of emotions. As a child (and even sometimes now) I would cry when happy, or if I found something funny or exciting.

As an adult I find myself much preferring contentment. I like the feeling of what I can only describe as 'neutral'.

Does anyone know what I mean? It's really hard to explain.

Yeah, definitely 😀

Sometimes my adhd kick up and demands some relief from the routine, but it's usually satisfied by a car drive out in the countryside and a coffee and scone in a cosy coffee shop.

Livin' the high life 😆

I dint know what contentment feels like. I am constantly vacillating between extremes, and when I do get snatches of peace I look for new things to distract me.

Are you autistic or ADHD?

Adhd
Does contentment feel boring to you would you say? My husband has ADHD and he really does flit from one thing to another and gets bored very easily.

My autism keeps a lot of my adhd at bay. It mostly manifests as physical restlessness, boredom and inability to focus or concentrate. I don't have the search for excitement thing going on because my autism means I'm introverted and very cautious, plus ruled by routines.

I like a background feeling of contentment and my boredom is easily relieved by going on my phone or having a change of scenery. Ds1 has adhd and his boredom is harder for him to deal with because he needs a high level of socialising and going to different places.

QuiteAtALoss · 09/02/2022 10:21

Yes, maybe so! I have a high baseline of background anxiety, so instead of feeling bored and then looking for excitement, I just worry about stuff and catastrophise.

Contentment is definitely better for me - I don't like moving towards extremes of emotion.

BlackeyedSusan · 09/02/2022 16:45

That sounds tough Quite.

I favourite emotion is definitely feeling content. I love feeling safe and comfortable. Nothing makes me happier than being in my bed using my laptop Grin

I love contentment in my day to day life but need stress and conflict or I get bored, and then bad things happen. Luckily for my family I get stress and conflict through work.

In lockdown I used Animal Crossing as my outlet. Also have a long commute sometimes so that tires me out.

I love a tidy room with the sun out, and nothing but yoga to do for two hours. But that's against the backdrop of having busy times.

MsMeNz · 10/02/2022 21:06

Yes absolutely I seek peace not excitement as it's so rare to feel and experience. I usually only feel it alone out in nature away from everything and everyone.

deeplyrooted · 12/02/2022 10:27

Definitely contentment for me. (Adhd)
