Hi all
I’m diagnosed ADHD and have been for years, at first, I was medicated and responded well (concerta), but I decided to stop taking meds, as I had some time as a SAHM and it was mostly work stuff I was struggling to focus on (v involved role)
I’m now back at work and for the past few years, I’ve been in a role which hasn’t stretched me at all, so I’ve (just about) coped with focussing, etc. Now I’ve been asked to step up at work and I’m starting to struggle with time management, focus, prioritising, the lot!
I’m thinking of going back on meds, given my previous positive experiences, but I’m wondering if the GP can now prescribe them (psychiatrist handed over prescribing to GP originally), or whether I’ll have to have a psych referral first? For context, I’m terrified of most doctors, but especially psychiatrists, due to past history 😥
At the moment, this feels like a barrier to going back on meds and if I can’t cope at work, I’m worried I’ll lose my job.
Thanks for reading

Sorry you've had bad experiences in the past Flowers

I think it depends on the area (there's no shared care at all where I am) and on the GP. The only way to find out is to speak to your gp.

Since you're asking to go back to a dose/drug that has worked for you in the past, they may be happy to prescribe.

Do you know your GP?

I would imagine that you'd need a psychiatric referral because it's been so long. Adhd meds can only be prescribed by a consultant psychiatrist.

Thanks both, I have a trusted GP at the surgery, but it’s damn near impossible to get an appointment with a chosen GP, due to covid.
And getting past the receptionist is the first challenge 🙈
I think I just need to pick a week when I’m feeling particularly brave and run with it. I just wasn’t sure if there was a defined time period for consultant-GP handover prescribing

You could write to the GP that you trust. They'll probably contact you with an appointment then.

Adhd meds need to be overseen by a psychiatrist so you will probably need a psych referral. Does your surgery do an e consult or can you email your preferred gp?
