Talk to me about your workplace RA for autism

Anyone have any Reasonable Adjustments for autism in place at work?

Currently struggling with my employer regarding adjustments for my office based role. I mask very well and I suspect they think I am taking the piss/ or would just like me to give up and leave.

I don't have anything formal, it's all agreed within our team, but:

  1. My line manager is very flexible about my working hours - we've agreed key team stuff that I must attend and then everything else is as long as it's done to the standard expected.
  1. My workload is now skewed towards tasks I do well and that suit me (I didn't ask for this) - this is partly luck as nobody else in the team has exactly the same skillset so it also makes good business sense for me to do this.
  1. In meetings there's now a rule that you don't put anyone on the spot for an answer. It's also fine for me to take a break if needed and being camera on/off is up to me.

The biggest help is the first, though. It's working because I've never lasted in a team more than 2 years until now.

@Percie thanks for the reply. That's great that you have those informal arrangements. Having a good team manager is so key.

My issues at work are around working in open plan office spaces and auditory processing issues.

Is you line manager supportive at all @FeliciaMcAspieGreer ? It's made such a difference for me, it's just frustrating that it's down to luck.

What sort of adjustments have you asked for/do you need to ask for? Is there a policy giving any guidance on this? How big is the open plan space?

Moving away from open plan is a big thing at our place just now thanks to a combination of WFH with the pandemic and the creation of a ND group so we can lobby for changes collectively rather than individually.

I have a formal RA and it's super helpful - I've been through several managers over the last few years so it's useful to have it officially agreed with the business so it can't be changed on a whim. Mine covers my working hours, when I can be asked to travel and how, and a few other useful things like I struggle to switch focus quickly so I can ask for support if I'm being asked to multi-task too much.
