Echolalia

Echolalia is when autistic people repeat noises, phrases or words that that they hear. My severely autistic brother does it all the time. Its the main part of his speech. He doesn't say it TO people because he doesn't have conversations, he just repeats things others have said all day long.

I never thought I did it because I don't repeat what people say when they are talking to me but I noticed that I do do it with sounds. If a car horn beeps, I'll say "beep", the same when a dog barks or a cat meows. I don't do it for every sound, but I definitely do it.

Any other people here have echolalia?

I do it for sounds, like the beeps before the radio news. Definitely with animals. I love copying sheep and cows. If my cats make a sound I'll make it straight back to them. I don't do it with humans though.

I have a thing where I like to repeat certain phrases and rhymes just because they feel nice. I sing the same made up songs over and over.

I instinctively reply with "beep" to car horns too! I do it with some other noises but I don't always notice I'm doing it.

When I am stressed. Mainly words that have a nice feel to them.

I suspect I also do some of the sounds thing...

I echo DD a little. So far we have not got stuck in two way echolalia. Imagine that.... round and round we go with no way out...

DD copies movements too.

I'm neurotypical but my dc isn't and echoes a lot. I've found myself doing it a lot now too and it's quite soothing! I think it can be a learned thing too.

Not personally, but my DD has Tourette’s with echolalia, and echopraxia

We do often get stuck in a conversation going nowhere where she’s just repeating everything I say back to me. She copies sounds - dog barking, smoke alarm going off.

She also copies movements - clapping, etc

I've never heard of echopraxia. How interesting!
