I'm always excited to discover Muslims on MN. So to satisfy my curiosity I'm wondering who we all are ethnically? I'll start by saying I am of Pakistani heritage and was born in a Muslim household, although I didn't really take any interest in my faith until I was an adult and rediscovered it myself. How about you?

I am white brought up Church of England. I converted 16 years ago. Whilst I don’t practice all aspects of the religion, the foundations of the belief system and how God is described suit my beliefs better then the Christian idea of a trinity that I was raised with.

PinkTeaForMe · 12/04/2024 11:00

That's really interesting to know @headstone How did you discover Islam?

When I was studying in France in my early twenties I met North Africans and I adored their culture and community. Later on I met my then to be husband who introduced to the basic principles which made a lot of sense to me. I never really understood the trinity and how God could be his own son as well as what the hell is a Holy Ghost! The beauty about Islam is it’s simplicity , One God and his Profets, no need for a middle man to worship God. I converted around 2 years after my marriage. Islam is totally different to how it is portrayed by the West which imo is based on colonial ideas.

@headstone mash'Allah.

I'm bengali. born into a Muslim family but didn't really understand or practice my faith until I was about 18

Speccybibliophile · 12/04/2024 12:04

Slms I'm also Bengali, born into a Muslim family. Really interesting to read everyone's experiences on here.

I'm white British from a very C of E family (my reverting did not go down particularly well).

Reverted shortly after leaving uni. I'd been exploring my own relationship with faith for a while, but what inspired me to seriously consider reverting was an inspirational man I met through some work I did with victims of torture. Despite everything he'd been through, he didn't hold on to any bitterness, he had no regrets and his faith inspired him to be incredibly brave. If I can be half as good a person as he was/is (I don't know what happened to him after I stopped working with him), I'll consider my time in this dunya well spent.

It's lovely to hear about everyone's experiences. So many people that I meet who were born Muslim describe going through the process of discovering and accepting the religion for themselves. I guess we're in a privileged position because the foundations are laid by our families even if it means nothing to us at the time.

I always admire reverts because it must take a different kind of strength to discover and learn about Islam with no Islamic background. Especially if your family doesn't adapt well to the change. The people who helped you there sound inspiring.

Salaam Alaikum everyone- so lovely to hear your stories and backgrounds especially those of you who have reverted Ma Sha Allah- they are always inspiring!

My dad is Pakistani and my mum is mixed English and Pakistani- when we were kids we knew the basics and were sent to mosque to learn how to read the Qur’an but I only started praying when I was 14 and it was in my late teens that I started trying to understand Islam more and actually trying to be a Muslim because I wanted to be not just because I was born into a Muslim family.

anotherlevel · 13/04/2024 20:53

I'm glad someone's asked because I've been wondering the same and wanted to be nosey too 🙈😂

I was born into a Muslim family from Mauritius. My dad isn't very religious at all and my mum is to an extent. Growing up it wasn't very strict but as I've gotten older I've been more interested in it and trying to better myself with knowledge.

PinkTeaForMe · 13/04/2024 21:52

@anotherlevel I'm just nosey, there's no other reason really haha! But it's lovely to meet Muslim women from different backgrounds and with different experiences. We really are a diverse bunch!

My parents are both Pakistani but my mum was born here. I went to mosque but was badly bullied there (by both pupils and teachers). It put me off Islam a lot, I reconnected with it when I was in my late 20's Alhamdulillah.
I married a revert and we have a child. His family were not originally open to him being a revert but by the time I met him, they were more supportive.
It's nice to meet sisters from different backgrounds with life experiences. Hoping we can all learn from eachother In sha Allah 🙏

ForestFawn · 15/04/2024 11:12

Hi ladies! I’m Arab, and am also married to a revert. Generally we’re not that religious but we try and teach our children the basics and fortunately live close to my parents who are heavily involved and therefore help in ensuring the boys have a solid Islamic foundation.

Really pleased that there is finally a space where we can post without the thread being hijacked by others!

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 23/04/2024 17:14

Salam 💛 I am white British revert alhamdulillah

wowihaveagardennow · 23/04/2024 21:50

Salaam all! I'm also Bengali 🇧🇩😊

Springchickenonion · 02/05/2024 23:01

White British revert here too! 16 years this year.

Hurrylater · 02/05/2024 23:26

I was born into a Pakistani Muslim family and don't feel any connection to my religion, never have done. I would love to have that connection with God but I just don't believe in the whole concept.

You'd never really know, I mask it well. I go through the motions.

I'm envious of people who have faith and the serenity it brings them. But I can't reconcile a God who allows so much suffering.
